I spent 4 years in York and I love the place. I would recommend both the Castle Museum and the Railway Museum for kids. Not upto date on places to eat but there are some great pubs for lunch and the fish and chips at most chippies is delicious.0

RE MORTGUAGE THE HOUSE ! AND TAKE PLENTY OF MONEY LOVELY CITY BUT ITS DEAR !0 -
There is a nice new place just opened in Gillygate called the Sanctuary. Very cheap, very nice food. 2 main meals for £6.50 and a nice bottle of wine for £6. You will need to ask the way to Gillygate or check a map as it is not right in the centre (but only 5 minutes walk) and in a street with lots of interesting arty/crafty shops. Another cheap place is Coffee Culture on Goodramgate - good for sandwiches, soup that kind of thing. The Spurriergate Centre right in the centre of town is very child friendly and food is good (it is in a converted church building)
The Railway Museum is free I believe but the Minster is not. A boat trip on the river can be nice if it's not too cold.
The Viking Festival is on from the 16th - 26th if you are there at that time.0 -

As someone from York i think its the same price as leeds, sheffield or coventry though accommodation is not the cheapest.0 -

Hi
I love York.My daughter spent a year there at Uni and I went to stay with her for a couple of weeks!Fab place- would love to move there!
The Art Gallery was free when I visited and also the Railway Museum. You can take a trip round the city on a Double Decker- again when I was there you could get on and off when you wanted - use the ticket all day!
We also ate in a pub in Gillygate- cant remember the name but lovely food. My daughter lived just up from there near the University.
OOOO must go for the day- only a 25min train ride from here!!
Hope you have a great time

I went to uni there too, and I stayed behind and worked there afterwards. A lot of people stay there after graduation. Its a great place. I try and get back once a year for a weekend. I also vist the Knavesmire several times a year but that's another story.0
