The Roman Bath pub, next to Browns Dept Store, right in the centre, provides excellent quality lunches, and perhaps evening meals. too!

If your appetite is not too huge, I suggest you look at the portions before you order as one of their baguettes can easily be cut in two for a decent meal, maybe with an extra portion of chips between you!

Hi, can anyone from York remind me of when the Viking Festival is on. I went years ago and I think it was sometime in February. We stayed at the Golden Fleece, which was great, only recently found out that it is haunted,"shudders"

national railway museum is a must and free! for food we like the two for one pubs both accesible by public transport if u dont have a car, one on clifton moor, flying legends has a wacky warehouse which does the tots time weekday mornings for 2 hours i think. its cheap and u get a cuppa t and toast for the little un too. also riverside farm at shipton is very nice too. also has a wacky but not as good as the legends one, large portions at both and not badly priced. the first buses have a daily ticket i think its £2.60 to travel anywhere in york. oo and another good place for littleuns is rowntrees park, mine luv it there but dont forget the bread for the ducks or u will never be forgiven!!!

    have a great weekend!
  • Hi

Im from York and I can recommend the following - Railway Museum (free and absolutely fab!), Castle Museum (also fab and free for York residents), river cruise (depending on weather!), tour of city on opentop bus, Rountree Park and The Homestead (both free parks and are absolutely excellent for letting little ones let off steam), York Minster (maybe not suitable for little ones though! it costs you to go in though, but is worth it - i have just managed to get a free tour of the bells, climbing all the way up to the top of the minster by going with my son on a cub trip!), shopping (York has some excellent little unique shops and there are often street performers - the escape artist is really good and passes away a good half hour - we usually get a sausage roll from the bakers whilst we watch him - same routine every time but still makes me laugh!) if you are coming by car there are lots of other options (Royal Armaries in Leeds is free), trip to seaside (Filey, scarborough or Bridlington). If it is bad weather then there is always the cinema (York has 3!) or Megabowl, York Dungeon, York Theatre Royal or The Grand Opera House to keep you and the kids amused. There is also a little fudge shop where you can watch the fudge being made and have some free samples!

There are lots and lots of places to eat in York that cater for everyone looking for the very cheap to the very expensive! One to avoid if you are on a budget is bettys, but i recommend that you stop by and look in the window! They also have a bakery attached and you can get buns to take away (their fat rascals are nice!) if you like italian as i do, a lot of places do lunchtime specials and are very child friendly. Caesars do a lovely lunchtime special and cater for kids, and Totos have an early bird menu for £4.95 for any main course and I think that lasts into the early evening. There is also an all you can eat chinese buffet called Jumbos which is really cheap and you can really fill up! They are good with kids and their prices vary (more expensive later in the evening - they put slightly different food out) if you just want to grab something on the go then York now has 3 Subways, MDs, Burger King, loads of bakeries that do takeaway sarnies, cakes and pastries, cornish pasty shop (yum yum!), boots, M&S etc for sarnies. I could go on all night! Let me know if you need any more info! :D

  • Also forgot to mention that there are lots of ghost tours in the evenings. these can be a bit scary for younger kids, but are very popular, not too expensive and you get to see parts of york that you wouldn't normally see. Another option to this a tour around the city but a Roman Soldier - sign about this outside the Roman Bath pub.

If you have a National Trust card or have one that you can borrow off someone then bring it, as there are lots of National Trust properties nearby and you can get into them for free with this card.

York is one of my favorite places and my favorite place in York is, without doubt, the railway museum. Kids from of ages love it (I'm 47 and I know I do!). It's free and you can spend hours just wandering around.

I'm no train buff, but I just have to admire the engineering of the old steam engines - they are practically works of art.

On the other hand my least favorite place is the Yorvik centre. I went years ago and was very impressed. However, a couple of years ago there was a vast amount of money spent on "upgrading" it and it seemed much worse after. I find it a pain to get in (big queues), overpriced, boring and the trip around lasts no time at all. Maybe it is just me that doesn't like the place, so I would recommend that you check with other people who have been.

Have a great time, whatever you decide to see and do! :j
