Free Eye Test at Tesco

I am a contact lens wearer, and i usually go to a local optician for my eye test and lens check ups, but last year took advantage of a £5 eye test at tesco opticians in weston favell, northampton. Bargain! or so I thought. This was unfortunately for me a very disappointing experience, and a big waste of time.

they did an eye test, and said my eye sight has improved significantly (this wasn't true, as I tested with another optician afterwards, who said although it had improved, not by quite as much as tesco said). as well as saying this, they also said i had a very dry eye from using contact lenses, so told me to stop wearing them for a week and come back. i did so, and when I came back, they not only said I had the same problem, but it had also spread to the other eye! they then told me to stop for another week (I hate wearing glasses by the way).

when I returned again, they said I still had the same problem, so they said they would need to refer me to the hospital! quite drastic measures for someone who wasn't even feeling any discomfort (my eyes felt completely normal). this was over 8 months ago, and I am yet to hear back from the hospital.

Luckily I didn't hang around, but promptly went to another optician, who confirmed I did indeed have dry eyes, but it was nothing extreme, and they told me to wear contact lenses a little less often, and to use good eye drops regularly. now after another check up, my eyes are okay. tesco may be cheap, but cheap doesn't necessarily mean the best!

i'm sure everyone wouldn't have a bad experience like I did, but from now on, I will carry on getting my groceries there, but will never go to get my eyes checked there again!!! good luck moneysavers!

don't wish to be a killjoy - but the coupon states 'no copies' - surley printing this off here is 'a copy' ?? (best get the magazine) also - in the small print on the coupon it says 'excludes NHS sight tests' - I used to work in an opticians and you are entitled to take your NHS prescription away with you once you have paid for the test - but I suspect that as this is a 'Tesco sight test' you may not be given the opportunity to take a copy of the prescription away- therefore you can't buy your glasses or contact lenses elsewhere. I may be wrong about this - so someone let me know please.
Tesco are good value anyway so it is still a good deal.

I also used to work in an opticians. An NHS sight test is where the customer does not pay, the NHS does. Legally the optician HAS to give you a copy of your prescription, for your records if nothing else.

I took advantage of this offer last time Tescos did a freebie eye test and can confirm that they do give you your prescription to take away - I didn't even have to ask, it was given as a matter of course.

I have just had mine tested by Tesco , voucher in free paper also voucher for BOGOF . So got two pairs , Excellent service but they didn't give me my perscription.

I have used Tesco Opticians at Pitsea and i wasnt over impressed. My glasses were made to the wrong prescription and i was told i had to pay for a remake of the reactions even though they got it wrong.
Had another eye test and was told i had to get used to the glasses.
I went back to Specsavers and had eye test and they checked the glasses that tesco had made me up and they were totally different to the prescription they had given me.

I can't decide whether to go to tescos or specsavers, is there anymore experiences of both? They both seem quite cheap but what about the priscriptions are they very good?
