Os Treatment For Nits

It's true that combing and conditioner help to keep nits at bay but my daughters both have long curly hair and it is a nightmare to continue this treatment for any length of time (and backbreaking). Here is what works...mayonnaise!

Carefully section the hair into quarters. Then take small sections of hair from each quarter and work dollops of mayonnaise into each section from the roots to the tips of the hair - don't stint on this. When you've finally done, wrap the hair tightly around the head and wrap a few layers of cling film around the hair. Leave for at least 2 hours and wash out and condition as normal (it comes out really easily). Follow this procedure 7 days later and "voila" no nits! I have used this on my family (including myself) with great success 3/4 times in the last 2 years and it has worked every time. Once, I rushed through the sectioning process and didn't do a thorough enough job the first time round so I had to repeat the process for a 3rd week but it did work in the end. This method has worked without even combing through with a nit comb and conditioner after washing the mayo out so it's not that that's got rid of them. I don't know why it works - whether it's the mayo itself or because the temperature is raised with the cling film on your head - it must be worth further investigation.

BTW, I have used Tesco's Value mayo - 2 large jars seem to be enough each time for my family of 5 but as I said my daughters both have long thick hair.

It's got to be better than putting loads of insectisides on your kids heads and they rarely work now anyway which is why schools are recommending the comb and conditioner option.

Plus it's really cheap. I keep a couple of jars in stock so I can treat straight away as soon as that dreaded letter arrives from the school.

    Happy Bug Busting!

I caught nits off the children i used to childmind, i went to the hairdressers for a regular colour and mentioned that I was all itchy, she confirmed that i had some but said that the hair dye would just kill them - could you dye the hair ( a natural colour obviously) or is this back to chemicals again?
  • Don't have time to read through all just now, but..

My mum's a headteacher of a primary school, and she swears by using a big bottle of the cheapest conditioner, mixed with some tea tree oil, and combing through with a nit comb. The conditioner ensures that the sticky lice eggs can't stick to the hair/scalp, (which is why the mayo works) while the tea tree oil is antiseptic and antifungal.

I can confirm that hair dye works, everytime DD gets them I am bound to catch them too, as my hair is down to my waist wet combing would be a nightmare but I found that dying my hair (getting to be a have to rather than a want to these days) always got rid of them.

    Hi Thiftlady,

Don't know if vegan mayo works but I don't see how you could do any harm by trying - you definitely have to be thorough about applying it and repeat the treatment a week later though. In fact, it would be very interesting to see if it did work, wouldn't it, because if it didn't then perhaps it's got something to do with the eggs in the normal mayo. Maybe we could hit on a natural cure for nits that works and make our fortune - what do you think?

    Regards,

    Maybe !
The only trouble with vegan mayo is that it costs so much more than regular. But don't get me started on that  I seem to have to pay over the odds to get anything safe for my dd to eat.

What's really bugging me is how she can be allergic to wholesome natural foods like eggs and nuts, but not organo-phosphate pesticides like Malathion

I found that daily dry combing with the nit comb, and wet combing on hair-wash days with any old conditioner did the trick. The metal "Napp" brand combs made the children whinge less - would glide through the hair with less snagging than the plastic ones. I always combed them through when the kids first came home, so we generally got the little beasties off their heads before they had chance to lay eggs (apparently they tend to lay at night!). Luckily, we don't have the problem now that they're at secondary school, but I'm still too paranoid to let any of us visit the hairdresser/barber without checking for nits first! Would hate to have it discovered in public!!

Australian Bodycare 100% tea tree oil keeps my kids clear of head lice, even at their old school which was always infested. They only ever caught them if I forgot to tea tree them on a regular basis. On top of that I also use Faith in nature tea tree shampoo and conditioner(only started this in the past couple of months though). I get my tea tree oil from QVC.

The most effective shampoo we've used is a Neem oil shampoo (got it from an organic market but I think the health shops sell it). And combing, combing, combing! Dry comb each day and wet comb on hair-washing days.

Luckily for me a daily blast with hair straighteners seems to keep them off my head, not sure my son would be too happy about me going near his head with them though!
