When DS1 and DD1 were at school I couldn't use the 'treatments' because they were both asthmatic and the electric comb was out because DD1 had epilepsy, so, like Spendless's mum, I used to use vinager and it worked a treat, it stunned the little devils making them easy to comb out :T

Now DS2 and DD2 are at school, I keep DS2's hair cropped and DD2's hair tied back to try and minimise the problem. On the rare occasion that they have caught them, I resort straight back to the good 'ole vinager :rotfl:

Curry Queen has the right advise. Conditioner and a nit comb used at least every other day will get rid of adults and newly hatched. Our Nit nurse used to say brushing the hair also helped as it broke the legs of the headlice which meant they couldn't climb the hair. But alot of people don't follow through with the treatment with the whole family. Mums and dads can get them too! I used to have a nit comb in the shower tray with the shampoo and conditioner, that way all the family got used to doing their own whenever they washed their hair. If there is a big nit problem in your childs school constant conditioning is the only cure. Unfortunately not all mums care enough about this problem hence the constant reinfestation. Lice love CLEAN hair!

Tea tree oil doesn't always work and in any case is a bit toxic if used regularly. On the other hand I pretty much guarantee that quassia wood will sort the problem out. You can get chips of quassia wood from a herb suppliers. Boil a handful in a saucepan of water; i.e. bring to boil and then simmer for 20 mins. Let this cool, strain and use this either mixed with shampoo when washing or as a final rinse. If you have lice to start with then use daily for five days, then every two or three days for a couple of weeks. After the first couple of occasions (or after you have dealt with the infestation) you can put the decoction in a spray bottle and spray over hair. It doesnt smell, isnt sticky, doesnt stain. And very effective. Nothing much really kills the eggs, hence need to use repeatedly to ensure you get the critters as they hatch. But it really does work!

Tell me about it I thought I was going mad scratching all time got cuts all over my head, OH says there's nothing there. Nothing coming out when combing. After about 3 days I got him, The Lone Ranger is no more. And I've Priodermed any eggs he may have left as presents as I don't wish to have any more visitors tap dancing and feasting on my scalp!!!!!

It is a persistent problem in my daughter's school. She is obviously playing with someone regularly who is infested and who's mother doesn't do the job properly. I buy a cheap conditioner and mix a few drops of tea tree and a few drops of lavender in and comb through - it does work in getting rid of them, but then she goes back to school and gets them again. We were lice free over Christmas - within a week of going back I was popping the little buggers with my nail again.

Now I have resorted to pulling her beautiful long blonde hair tight to her head, plaiting it as tight as possible and spraying hair spray, mousse or gel on it so that they can't get a foothold. It's driving me mad as bathtime becomes a complete trauma and she gets upset. We often get letters home from school warning us that there is another outbreak. Interestingly, my husband and I have never caught them (famous last words!) but we use gel, mousse, serum etc on our hair which seems to protect us, hence my theory in spraying my daughter's hair. Help!!!

I remember catching them after giving one of my friend's daughters a cuddle too  ... thankfully my hair was pretty short then so managed to get rid pronto, but I dread to think what I'd do if I ever caught them again as there's no way I'd get a nit-comb through my long hair now

<scratch scratch> ... anyone else itching like mad reading this thread??? :D

It is that what you do, good or bad,
will come back to you three times as strong!

  • Completely agree with curry queen. No need for nasty chemicals. Combing through every day (some say every 3 days will break the cycle if done 4 times) BUT of course the it only needs one child to not have been checked/treated/combed and the next day they may all be reinfected.

There was a good campaign that we got free in our area (NE Scotland) a few years back called Bug Busting and it proposed schools adopted two days a year when everyone took in their packs - (free combs and instruction sheets) and did everyone together. Would your school consider this? Will post web address if I can still find it. Good news is that this problem seems to miraculously stop when they get to secondary school.

Does your primary uphold the seating arangement where kids are grouped around tables and they all 'huddle' together in group time/activities. Bad move for may many reasons, educationally and health wise. See if the PTA can have them move back to desks all facing front.

    Best of luck.

At the ends pof the day the little blighters are a nuisance but no more than that.

We really should have got rid of the stigma but there will always be those who couldn't be bothered to deal with or are too embarrassed to admit or 3even don't know what to look for/do!

Bring back nit nurses or health visitors in schools. Might also stop the constant round of tummy bugs cos parents won't keep sick children home.
