An OS Valentine's meal?

Thanks for the strange tip... No, I don't usually have a problem drinking half a bottle of wine. For the past few months however I've felt dehydrated (like a hangover) whether I've drunk or not- then its worse if I do drink. I'm trying to drink lots of water too... Think I'll have to go an alternative health route as I'm getting nothing from the gps regarding other health problems. When I told 1 I had a persistant and irritating rash on my nose for 4 1/2 years she suggested moisturizer- doesn't she think I might have tried that??!!
(And my partner finds that now any alcohol will worsen his asthma so thats his excuse!)0 -
It is OH's birthday in 10 days time and I really want to pull out all the stops for a romantic meal.
He loves food and in large quantities!
I have a crab in the freezer and wouldn't mind creating that into some sort of yummy starter. I also have some reduced Guinea Fowl breasts but last time I cooked them even in wine they were disappointing. He likes red meat and I was thinking of cooking venison. We don't have sweet tooths so I won't bother with dessert but I was thinking of doing some sort of homemade nibbles (any ideas) to start with a glass of something fizzy.
Any ideas would be very gratefully received0 -
Venison is a definite yes - so easy and delicious.
My understanding is that it is hard to roast well (being so lean it has a tendency to be dry) but I adore it casseroled so roasting isn't an issue!
Cooked very slowly in red wine (with pickled walnuts if you can get them) it's gorgeous, served with new potatoes and a selection of veg. Simple but tasty, and you can devote your time to ravishing OH rather than slaving over a hot stove!
Homemade nibbles might be as simple as little flavoured toasts, with cheese or herbs or garlic? Or you could get exotic with some vol-au-vents?0 -

lucky you! i LOVE planning romantic meals for two and have trawled the internet over the years for inspiration.
My man is also a big eater and loves his meat - so i have always done lamb or steaks etc but last valentines i borrowed a fondu set and it was A HUGE success. it means youre not away from the table dishing up etc after the first course and its fun to eat fondu together.
you can use steak and chicken as well as veggie chinks to dip and then the choice of sauces is up to you.
off to do a search to see what you can do with that crab now : )0 -
Oh wow, that Venison sounds gorgeous and you are right I can then devote my attentions to him rather than the cooker which is usually the case!
Thankyou0 -

You can make a delicious crab meat, tarragon and prawn cocktail for starter served with delicious HM rye bread.
or Crab tartlets
I marinade my venison with some garlic, onions and red wine over night then slowly casserole it with some cinnamon, nutmeg the juices from the marinade and some stock. I quite often add buttton mushrooms to the casserole close to the end of cooking. The casserole would go lovely with some Mashed potato flavoured with finely chopped spring onion or some HM lemon thyme (or other herb) dumplings.
Nibbles: HM blinis topped with smoked salmon and /or HM hummus
or some tapas like marinated olives, marinated cheese and salted almonds"A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain." Mark Twain0 -
Just to add crab and tarrogon sauce for Cocktail can be made in miorning and just put together last minute and Venison casserole can be cooked in SC all day and then add dumplings (which can be prepared am) an hour before serving.
Blinis can be cooked day before."A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain." Mark Twain0 -
I usually get venison steaks if I am cooking a special meal for dh as it is his favourite meat I just fry it and serve it medium-well done with some raspberry sauce salad and HM potatoecroquettes this then means that all I have to do is cook the steak which is less then 5 min. Rather then a sweet i will often serve oatcakes, cheese and grapes with a glass of port. If you make the crab into a crabcocktail you can do most of the work in advance.
Have a great night!!

I have a recipe for mock-venison pot-roast if you have difficulty getting decent venison. You start with beef and it ends up tasting just like venison. Bizarre but everyone at the party (13 people) agreed.Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!0
