HMV refuse cash refunds

  • I find it hard to believe that people are under the assumption that a shop has to give you a refund for something you've just changed your mind about. That said, it would seem from this thread that some people do.

I'm guessing that people are so used to a lot of stores having a goodwill refund policy, they just assume it's normal. I wouldn't mind betting that the majority of people who presume a shop has an obligation to take things back are too young to remember a time when you wouldn't have even seen a point in asking!

  • I wish I never started this thread
  • Or take them away again, open the box then take them back in and SAY they are faulty..

    i agree with you! :T

If HMV are reluctant to take back unopened goods mistakenly purchased, then they have lost my custom!

One of the strange things I found was when I used a voucher. I had about 1.21 change from the voucher and they had to give it to me on a HMV gift card. I can see why but thats a lot of hassle really.

Curious one though with HMV. I used to do mystery shopping for a while and HMV were one of the companies we shopped with. However with them you had to buy an item go away for 20 minutes or so and then return to the shop and ask for a refund. Never had an issue. This was around 18 months ago so the policy must have changed.

Yes it has changed (HMV manager here) but you were told to come back shortly afterwards as it was perfectly obvious that you had only just bought the item and hadn't had the chance to watch it / copy it / swap it for a faulty item (in the case of consoles especially).

We have what we call a 'common sense' returns policy. If you've only just bought it, then you would prob get a refund. If you bring something back 2 weeks later with obvious signs of use, you wouldn't.

That's about the gist of it.
  • I work at a large retailer and think it would be so much easier to do things hmv's way! As much as I respect that some people may make mistakes, some people take the mick outof the refund policies. For example, in our sale, we get people buying around £700-800 worth of goods, then returning them 2 days later, meaning we have to resort all of the goods, rehang them, and process them, and meaning that they have a got a load of bargains they didn't need that someone else could have. we also get people who buy things before the sale, return them and then try and buy them back at sale price-not happening! and the amount of times i have been shouted at because someone has no proof of purchase, and we will only honour the current selling price is unbelievable. If anything, go be mad at YOURSELF that you threw away the reciept, not at us!we are giving you a goodwill gesture in allowing you to return the item at all!after all, that item could have been stolen, or even purchased from a shoplifter themselves, there is no proof it was purchased form a shop.
Sorry about the rant but at the end of the day, I am only doing my job and i don't deserve shouting at. If you have a problem, ring head office and complain to them!

I worked in fashion retail and it really annoyed me when customers brought things back for a refund and then bought it again straight away at sale price. They should have just waited in the first place...

As for buying loads and returning it, it annoyed me too but then again, from a customer's perspective, sometimes for the first days of the sale, some shops (eg M&S and Next) close the fitting rooms, so you need to buy it to try it at home...I am between 2 clothes sizes so sometimes have to buy 2 if I am not sure...

Yes, any balances over £1 must be put onto a gift card.;)

If you purchase stuff from HMV.COM their online store then you can get a full refund. Only thing is you have to pay for postage to send it back!
