There is a number of qualifying criteria that any member of staff in the branch will discuss with you. You need to have a certain amount of money paid into your account each month and you have to run your account well and not have any missed payments, charges etc. Have you been careful with your account? You can only ask and see if you qualify-if you don't qualify for a Maestro Cheque Guarantee-ask for a non-chq guarantee one.

    Hope this helps!

I have just spoken with my bank at HSBC and for some reason the overdraft request system has changed.

How do I get an overdraft facilty , so I don't keep getting charged £25.00 each time I go overdrawn ??

Call telephone banking, enter all your details and choose the "discuss your borrowing needs" menu option, then press 1.

The advisor will ask you a few questions (contact information, work, salary etc - don't be surprised, it's a credit product) and then either agree your overdraft limit OR tell you that you could get a higher one, and would you like to apply for that instead? (I chose the latter.)

However, I wouldn't think, considering you say you get charged often, that they'd offer you an overdraft after having quite a few unauthorised ODs. The best thing to do is plan better and try not to go overdrawn at all.

Seeing as you're an HSBC bod, what are the criteria for a guarantee card?

Funny, mine's 43 and I got told I'd have to wait for another 8 months or so...

You sure? For a cheque guarantee card?

I don't think its appropriate for anyone to be giving out the exact information, but at 43 what the staff member told you ShelfStacker was correct (i.e. you would not automatically qualify).

I've been told over the phone that in order to qualify for a cheque guarantee card you must have at least £750 going into your account every month in the past six months.

I currently have a Maestro Card without cheque guarantee but could not be bothered to ask for an upgrade since I'd never use cheque in shops.

The Maestro Card without cheque guarantee facility is relatively new (introduced in December 2007). Before that everyone who would qualify for a Switch Card will automatically receive at least £100 cheque guarantee facility with their Switch Card. Things has changed now after the crunch and maybe not so many people are using their Switch card to guarantee cheque.
