AOL nightmare?

I was just wondering if anyone else had a major problem with AOL when they wanted to cancel their account? We got a good deal with another provider, so gave 30 days notice to cancel with AOL over the phone. For two consecutive months after that when our bank statements arrived, AOL continued to take our monthly subscription out! We emailed and phoned customer services on three occasions each, who told us each time that we would be credited within 21 days. The fourth time my fiance called up, the agent accused him of being a liar and that we had received a refund....! We sent two further letters by recorded delivery, and six months after the two amounts of £14.99 came out, we finally have received a letter from Ireland saying that we will definitely be credited within 21-30 days. Are we ever going to see our money again?!

I can syperthise, I've recently moved to O2 broadband after asking AOL 5 times for a new router. First 3 times they said it had been sent out and gone missing in the post & eventually 2 months after the 1st phone call, somebody told us it was in our postoffice awaiting collection. Except we had no evidence, we needed a letter.
They were very reluctant to let us cancel, keep trying to offer us aol phone line for £6.99 plus broadband but didnt seem to realise that having cheap phone line wouldnt mean I could access internet again.
Then, they had the cheek to send the MAC code to the aol account instead of my work email as requested (which they said they would), fortunetly I managed to get onto my AOL account and forward it to my work & go from there.
Never again though!
Oh, and also, thank you, I will make my dad aware to check his bank statements to make sure they take no further money from him.0 -
I surprisingly enough didn't have any problems leaving aol, i phoned them to ask for my m.a.c then gave it to sky and as soon as i set up my sky broadband i phoned aol again to cancel my account, and they did, they had no choice really because by that time sky was providing me with my internet, i waited for the date of the direct debit and they didnt even take another payment, sorted :j0

had exactly the same problems as you, I wrote to the complaints department 3 times via recorded delivery and only last week had a phonecall from a customer service advisor in Ireland, apologising and saying my card will be refunded within 21 -30 days too, so hopefully we will both be lucky! I used to pay by recurring payment on my credit card so was just about to raise a dispute when I got the phonecall, so I hope it's all sorted now.
I also changed to Sky Broadband and in my opinion they are 100% better than "A Oh Hell"

You were paying 14.99 a month for AOL? WHY? i`ve only paid 9-99 for the last 4 years, one year of dial up and the last 3 b/band,but then again I did ask for the best deal they could offer:j0 -
I never had any problems with AOL. They were always polite to me. I got my MAC code, switched to sky, and have saved a few hundred pounds by doing so.
The only reason I switched was for cost reasons.0 -
Exactly the same problem. Cancelled August 2008 (no notice required) and service was terminated. I was on a continuous credit card payment. August payment taken - fine, that was me paid up. Then September payment taken. They hadn't cancelled the c/c authority. At first (after 2 calls ) I thought forget it - it was only £9.99. Then a few things happened, interest charged on a interest-free card, Quidco declined a valid £55 cashback, and I thought 'sod this' - felt like I was being ripped off everywhere. So I kept chasing aol. Must have made 14 phone calls. Indian CS were useless - at least 4 times I was told it was being refunded to the credit card, it never was - lies ! Anyway second last call was to the complaints dept in Ireland, the guy said he'd send a £30 cheque to cover my time/inconvenience within 7 days and the £9.99 was definitely being refunded to the card. The cheque didn't turn up after 2 weeks, rang Indian CS, no record of any such offer. The cheque for £30 turned up this January (a month) but the refund to the card never did. I'm happy with the £30, that's enough. But same experience - it's hell getting your money back from aol.0

Best thing to do is to go with a good provider from anyone of the top 10 http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/top10.php0
