Got an old metro which has failed MOT badly. Pity cos its a nice car but its going to cost over £400 to get through the MOT and I was going to sell it anyway (prob for about £400).

I guess my only option is to sell for scrap? Anyone know anywhere decent in South Wales?

Probably have to pay now. The market in scrap cars has fallen through the floor apparently (you might need to do some research though)

Phoned three local scrappies and got quotes of £20, £30, and £40 so far.

Better than nothing I suppose. I might take the radio out and flog it on ebay as well...

AS Hintza says you may have to pay to have it taken away. All you can do is look trough the yellow pages and see if any will come out, if they do taking the radio and anything else out is a good idea.
Something else is worth a thought, do you use freecycle, advertise it on there. Someone will come for it, just say failed mot.

    How skint are you?

How about breaking it for spares and flogging off bits on EBay will probably get some good prices. Only problem will be getting the carcase away at the end. Might beat your £400 if your lucky.

    what did it fail on?

£400 isnt alot really when you consider what a garage charge in labour. I'm not suggesting pay it though just thinking weather you have a local decent DIY car mechanic who could do it for a case of stella etc IYSWIM?

I did think of that but not sure if the Mrs would be all that keen to have a scrap car left on the driveway !!!

Local free rag around here usually has details of people willing to pay good money to collect old bangers (even ones without MOT) - have you seen the prices of parts from [STRIKE]scrapyards[/STRIKE], sorry, vehicle dismantlers and recyclers lately?
Still a lot cheaper than new parts, but no longer can you pick up a part for peanuts (and perhaps have a spare or two fall into your pocket too!)

Local council has also reported a massive fall off in vehicles abondoned on roadside, and claim many seem to magically disappear before they manage to get to the few that are now reported

    Perhaps its a regional thing.

If you seel parts on ebay or whatever. Best put a ad up breaking for spares then people will email you. If you keep the wheels, exhaust, engine, drivetrain then scrappies will still take it. You can sell other bits eg. lights, radio, electrical components, smaller engine parts eg coils. Look at a site cartakeback you can see how much they will give you.
