Virgin MBNA Sharks again!!

If you look at the above post he clearly states that the minimum payment was £0.00 as he cleared the balance the month before.0

He's mistaken, or didn't write clearly.overlander wrote: »If you look at the above post he clearly states that the minimum payment was £0.00 as he cleared the balance the month before.
He said he paid the balance two weeks ago, yet had the fee applied yesterday...when his payment was due.
The Virgin card gives 50-56 days interest free so that's around 3-4 weeks between statement date and payment due date.
In summary, he paid the balance down 2 weeks ago, which was around 2 weeks after the statement (showing the minimum payment to be collected) was produced.

That sounds more like it, so he should not have canceled the direct debit.0

No, the DD should have either been cancelled with MBNA or he should have only paid the balance minus whatever was due to be collected by the DD.0

I think this stinks! I know that in the T & Cs which are always written to protect the compay and never the customer the CC company can do virtually what they want, but if the OP owed £0 why was Virgin trying to take any money. I appreciate that they work this way, but I think that any right-minded person would think that is wrong.
You have the right to cancel a DD whenever you want, it says that on the DD guarantee you are always given. If he owed £0 Virgin should not have tried to take any money. I am sure their system is not so antiquated that they cannot work that out.
I am sute I will get shot down in flames from the posters who always seem to defend the CC companies, but I think it is time that they showed common sense and worked the way us mortals all have to work, being reasonable and seeing sense.0 -
It's not in defense of the CC companies it's just how it is!!
Fact of the matter is, when a statement is released they will be looking to take a sum of money based on the original statement let's say £50 minimum for example when the card was in debit.
This can be confirmed becuase of what JMH wrote afterI just get online statements.
Total Mimumum Payment was £0.00 for this month as i'd already paid the balance.
The direct debit they wanted to take would have put me in the positive even more.
If the DD would have put the card in positive territory then the minimum payment would have to have been over £0 which would have been put in place before the full amount was paid off. So it must have been a typo.
They wouldn't just cancel it just because it was paid in full, they are a credit institution and they have procedures in place where at certain dates payments are put into process and then a day when a payment is actually taken out of an account. That's why when you receive a paper statement (as an example with dates) Dated 15th January with a min payment of £50, they say at the bottom "your payment will be taken by Direct Debit on the 27th January" but on the 15th was when the payment was put into placeMinds are like parachutes - they only function when open.

I personally think MBNA are a disgusting company and I am glad I am well shot of them. They pull people in with cheap rates then hit them with huge increases and hide behind small print. I was lucky I was able to get another cheap deal. I transferred to a Barclaycard. If I make a payment to them manually it automatically stops any direct debits going if I make over the minimum payment. I had exactly the same problem as the OP when I transferred away Why can't MBNA do that. Is it a case of can't or won't? They seem to me to be based on a business ethic of let's see how much we can fleece our customers for. If you can, get rid!0

When you clear a CC you should always wait untill the month after you clear it and get a statement that shows no money paid, no items bought so a total balance of £0.0
-
You shouldn't cancel a DD without the prior concent of the company involved because it costs them money to try and process it regardless of whether you have money in there or not. If i'm cancelling it I always call and ask if it's ok 1st
Sorry but this post really annoys me. Why on earth would you need some companies permission in order to deny them unilateral access to your bank account as and when they choose?
If you leave your front door open do you then need my permission to close it in order to stop me from robbing you?0 -

Because as far as their concerned they are authorised (by contract) to take a payment which you have denied them by cancelling it before they can take it! Read all the posts before you decide to comment
