I cant understand why they are telling you that you cant get child benefit for him if he goes back to college. As long as he is in f-t non-advanced education then you should be able to.
  • Wow, poor lad. Its good that you've taken him in, i fear that the government rely on people like you.

Has he been to the supermarkets?

    Isn't it crazy.
Me, a complete stranger, could take him in and charge him a big rent which he could claim for.
And his aunt who obviously loves him dearly, gets nothing at all.
    This country is barmy.

I too am glad you have taken him in. Poor soul must feel really rejected but he is lucky he has you to help even though it is a really difficult situation. Is there a Princess Trust or other organisation where he could maybe go on a course and would help in getting employment? Would be good for his confidence too.

It has to be the "right type" of course, but there will be major problems and delays if his mother hasn't cancelled her claim. They then have to do all kinds of investigations to check who has the rightful claim before turning it over to someone new -- and until you get the CB you can't get the CTC either (which may also still be in payment)

No real advice but just wanted to say the poor boy, how must he be feeling that neither parent wants him and have put their respective partners first? Thank goodness he's got you!

On a practical note, if your brother won't let him live there because of the new partner could he not at least give you something towards his keep? He is still his son after all, even £20 a week would help towards interviews etc.

    Yeah.

What I am saying though is that the DWP shouldnt be saying that those things can't be claimed when they can. It might take an age to do the investigations but it can be claimed.

    Hi
I was in the same situation last march,we had my nephew til june the 30th until he was old enough to claim housing and benefits in his own right.
It took the child benefit 6 weeks to start paying us (they do not backdate the 6 weeks either).Other than that we could not claim anything for him.
I wish you s luck as it is hard but VERY worthwhile.
My nephew just turned 17 and took his cbt licence today and passed YEAH !
He s also in employment now and has a lovely little flat.
He is back in contact with his mum but still not dad,
Don t underestimate just how much you can do for him,you have a huge opportunity to help him on the correct path in life.
Good luck op and contact child benefit straight away as long as he s still registered in full time education,if he isn t get to the local college asap.
    Best of luck

They can't be claimed if he's not in education though -- and ATM he's not, so the DWP are correct in what they're saying
