Monsoon - were they right?

I went to Southampton last week and saw a beautiful dress in the sale. I looked at the tag and it was originally £60, down to £30 and then down to £18! What a result so I snapped one up and took it to the till. There she told me that it was a mistake but would charge me £18. Great! I was so happy, I could have cried and I mean that! lol!
Anyway, when I tried it on it was too big! Yipppeeee!! :j I thought I was fatter than I actually am! lol.
SOooo I went to my local store and they had it in the smaller size :j so I took it to the till to exchange it. The woman rang it through and said...That will be £12 please??? She said that the Southampton store had marked it down wrongly and it was meant to be £30 which I already knew so she would have to charge me the extra £12. I should have fought my corner but I didn't so I asked for a refund.
But were they right? Why couldn't they do just a straight swap? No money was changing hands.
What do you all think?

personally i think that was wrong of them, if it said on the reciept that the southampton branch charged you £12, then that is what you should have got the smaller size one for. i hope you find a lovely, cheap dress again soonBEST WINS - beyonce tickets, lfwe tickets, maybelline calendar and makeup, pair of legally blonde tickets x 3

I think they were right.
It's down to the individual store to set their prices.
The Southampton store made a mistake, but honoured that mistake and sold it to you at £18, which was good of them, as they didn't have to do that. They could have just not sold it.
Then came your mistake... they have those things called changing rooms, which are always useful when different shops size things differently. I'm a 12 in Topshop, and an 8 in Monsoon! Thus you had to return the one that was too big (£18 refund), and buy another one at £30, the correct price.
I think Monsoon were good to sell it at the incorrect price, so this should be a 5* service, rather than a vent...Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
If a member of the public had managed to "swap" the price on the item, then the second member of staff wasn't to know you hadn't done this (no offence, but she was,'t).
Personally i would have asked for the staff members i/d number from the receipt and asked them to ring and speak to that person and confirm the conversation.
I guess they were a bit more suspicious because you took it back to a different store.I think the member of staff was just doing her job.0 -
Monsoon are terrible for having their items priced up wrongly. I've often seen racks and racks of stuff with big 70% off tags on them, and the prices marked accordingly. And yet when you get to the till, it's a mistake, and it should only be 50% or whatever.0

This is exactly what has happened!0 -

Thank you for the sarcastic tone. I was not questioning the sizes, I was questioning whether they were correct.0 -

I know you aren't implying anything but nothing was swapped. The tags on all the dresses were marked down to £18. I did check as I couldn't believe that they were so cheap.
There was no conversation to be confirmed as such as the receipt was quite clear. She scanned it and it came up £30 and then she gave me a discount of £12.
I don't think there was anything to be suspicious about. Or was/ am being niave??0 -
I used to work for Next and delt with a number of similar cases during sale time... Monsoon acted within the laws and regulations of consumer rights regarding advertised prices.
Had the dress been at the correct price in the first shop, then marked down further in the sale, it is likely that you would have gotten some money back.
Knowing the system, had you attempted an exchange without the receipt, you may not have been asked to pay the extra if the assisstant didn't spot the lower price on the returned dress.
Sorry, but I think Monsoon have not behaved incorrectly.0 -
I think that they were wrong.
You were swapping an item like-for-like and it would make their til £12 up in the end.If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!0 -

Perhaps I am confusing you,I am confused myself. If you are saying the assistant scanned the dress from the barcode at £30,but then deducted another £12 off (showing this on the receipt) after you objected, then surely the company must honour that descision.A receipt will have a number on it which will identify which member of staff served you, usually. If you yourself rang the original shop and explained this to the Manager,I think it would be unlikely that they would argue with this, and could convey this to the second shop.I am sure head office would have taken your side. That's what i would have done to get them to honour the amount,if i wanted to pay the same.I am sure a Manager would not have behaved in this way,the assistant maybe did not have the authority to use discretion, but a Manager could.0
