Norton 360 2009 is getting good reviews. Norton seem to be trying to sort out the problems with the last few versions they have had as they really started to get a bad reputation on their products.

I used to use Norton myself years ago and the product used to be excellent. Then it became bloated and mediocre. Now they seem to be getting back on the right path.

Norton - remove it, burn it. AVG/Avast - better. Combine it with Firefox and careful browsing...

Every machine that crosses my desk infected to the hilt has either Norton, or occasionally McAfee, and that's a lot of machines that are quite often unuseable as a result.

I will never use or recommend Norton/Symantec again..he was good with Norton Utilities in the 80's, the rest lost their way

I personally use Avast!, as it really kicks off and breaks the connection if it detects anything trying to come in proactively, as opposed to "you've already got it" warnings.

That's when I'm using Windows, of course..heh...I've just converted every system in the house to Ubuntu Linux 8.10, and now I laugh at Viruses.

We all have the same memory (though from the 90's)...Peter Norton with his essential utilities (I carried the disk around (3.5" ver 4? or 5?), used it everywhere I went!)...then he sold his name to symantec and it was all downhills :(

I used Norton 360 on both XP and Vista, it was ok on XP but sucked on Vista, driving the PC to a crawl

I now use (Vista 64) - hardware firewall and Vistas own, Avast, Tuneup 2008, Firefox with noads and noscript addons, hostsman, thats it, dont ever seem to have any issues

I use goodsync for backup as well to an external HDD

at the moment this setup runs sweet as a nut

Considering most problems with AV/viruses on here are AVG related and amount of times I have crossed machines infected with AVG I would add that to the list of "burning" along with Mcafee.

If your gonna pay for AV I would recommend Eset NOD32 or Kaspersky.

I agree; AVG seems to be more of a problem on here than Norton is, and when there is a problem with Norton, it's generally performance related (i.e. it's a big drain on resources). Norton 360 is a lot better than previous versions in this regard.

I have struggled with Norton / Symantec products for years. Largely they were buggy and bloatware. They would get it right on occasions but the next version / update would blow it and cause more problems.

However working at the ' interface ' , actually troubleshooting problems in homes and businesses I have had to be pragmatic and install only what was effective, resource neutral, easy to work with and install.

Six months ago I would have said avoid Norton produces and try Eset SM or just simple AVG free. They were effective and did what they were supposed to do. However recently AVG has been getting it wrong - false positives etc. Also some malware has been directly targetting AVG making it difficult to remove etc. Eset has been dropping in the ratings although it is easy to install and unobtrusive.
Meanwhile Symantec / Norton has produced Norton IS 2009 and Norton 360 Version 2. Both load up quickly - a few minutes on a slow computer and are easy to register. They are far less obtrusive but still raise firewall questions like allow I tunes? Silly really. Price wise they are cheap to buy but expensive to renew. Worth bearing in mind. Better to uninstall and install whatever is best at renewal rather than pay £55 or so to renew.

I am now recommending Norton products again. They are far from perfect but at the moment are the best of the bunch for the average home user.

Finally make a backup in case it all goes wrong - sad to see the consequences of AV failure ..

  • I would suggest Kaspersky, https://www.kaspersky.co.uk, you get a free scan - if your friends computer will allow it, a free trial and free telephone support, its not the easiest to set up, but the tech guys are pretty helpful, once its on the PC, you will find it does work pretty well
