    Competition Spam Already !

a newbie here - just joined the "mine for 2009" club and been entering competitions since 03/01 - for all the family

i've entered a total of 60 so far upto and including E: 09/01 and already my 3 freshly created family email addys have all received an email

Play.com Monster Sale: Save Up To 80% - It's Snow Joke!

now as i havent entered very many i have been very very careful with each one making sure to tick or untick the relevant boxes so you dont receive unsolicited email from either the organisers or third parties, but already play.com has infiltrated my inbox

i have tried searching the "competition time" incl child forum in vane to find the competition i entered so i could see if perhaps it was one where there was no way around it and i had to sign up to their newsletter as part of the entry, but i cannot find it :(

i've tried in quotes, with asterisks etc play.com or www.play.com in subject and title but i get back about a thousand results with any post thats got the word "play" in it

all i know is it was a comp that was for some kind of prize valued at over £100 whether it was a wii/ipod/laptop/holiday/bluray dvd player/home entertainment system etc etc and was between E: 03/01 & E: 09/01

can anyone remember which one it was ?
or perhaps help me with my search criteria to help narrow it down ?

    TIA

A mix of all the above

I usually have several windows open at once before I post a comp - one searching, one refreshing to see if its posted seconds before I hit 'submit' cos I'm so paranoid about duping.

Usually the search is pretty spot on for me, but sometimes there are few keywords to search so it is harder to find .

But mainly people just don't or have no idea how to search :p

Sometimes when I search using key words in the URL and the title, posts do not show in the results. I am referring here to ones that may have been posted a week or so previously. Why should this happen?

Does it really matter? - tbh if you are going to enter comps advertising like that you have received is part and parcel of it - that is not what I would classify as spam.

The search is not ideally suited to the compers needs, but that is because essentially this is not specifically a comping site - so we make do because the site is great.

I also have several windows open

one for posting, one for searching and one for watching the main thread.

    When i search:

    Only use key words

Search back 3 months if its a site i'm not very familiar with or 6 months if its a comp that looks like its been going for quite a time. Also tend to read T&C's before posting as sometimes that can give some idea as to how long its been going.

If i'm up to date with entering comps and find a new one on a regular magazine such as webuser or soglos then i dont search as i have a fairly good memory as to whats been posted today.

Also tend not to post comps that i know regular posters post unless its a couple of days later or i'm certain their away.

However, Feel the majority of dupes are posted as peeps dont know how to or cant be bothered to search properly. Searched but couldn't find:D

Play.com's tick boxes are way down beneath the lengthy T&Cs. Uusually a reminder is posted along with the competition, but easy to miss. I wouldn't worry - not often I get any email from them at all. However, you will inevitably get LOTS more email correspondence (not really 'spam') doing comps. One little drawback from the potentially good wins! :)

there is also the fact that a lot of compers know or used to know they were the ones who posted certain comps, even though it doesent matter who posts comps anyway but that muddles people aswell when they are used to posting comps from certain sites then someone else comes along and posts them instead, itms:rolleyes:
