Roses are like anything else, you can buy cheap roses, or you can get expensive roses, there isn’t one price for all. Like most things in life you get what you pay for.
A florists profit margin is less on these type of occasions than it is generally through the year because if the flowers were costed as they would be normally they would be even more expensive. If your wife is happy with your £4.99 roses, then good for you.
I take it that you all think it is the florist who hikes the prices up for Valentines Day? If you do then you couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s the suppliers of fresh flowers that charge more. I don’t know if this is because they are profiteering, or if the cost of producing so many roses for February costs that much more.
Have a look at last years Valentines roses thread (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=26661&page=1&pp=10), and you will see everyone complaining about missed deliveries or quality issues.
I own a flower shop, and all I can really say to all of you who will have delivery problems and quality issues with the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Marks and Spencer is. SERVES YOU RIGHT, but maybe you’ll support your local businesses next year.
Supermarkets are muscling in on all the smaller traders in the ‘High Street’. They cherry pick the lucrative things to do, and do them cheaper and that’s what closes the independent trader. It has been shown by the number of complaints on here that in some instances purchasing on price isn’t best practise.
Fortunately because Florists do provide more of a service they have lasted the onslaught for longer. If you don’t use them and they all go to the wall who will be left to do what the supermarkets aren’t interested in? Like your funeral flowers or your Wedding flowers?
When you buy these cheap bouquets, all your buying is cheap roses. As Tesco have illustrated their ‘Finest’ roses were the same price as everyone elses.0 -
I have, in the past, used Interrose, who delivered by post but were bang on time. The roses I ordered were excellent quality and lasted a long time...
The website is very basic but there's a lot to offer on there, I seem to remember ordering a black rose one year which was very well received
This year, they're offering single roses from £9.99, although you can buy just about any quantity you wish!0 -
If you send flowers from one end of the country to another, make sure you ask whoever you’re ordering through how they will deliver them. The multiples will send their flowers via a courier from a central warehouse.
What you have to be careful of are the websites or the big yellow pages advertisers who don’t have local addresses or phone numbers to where you want the flowers delivered. Even if you Google for a florist in say Durham you’ll get one or two that look local (they ‘buy’ the addresses to look local), but aren’t. All they will do to send your order is to relay it through to a local Teleflorist or Interflora member, some even ring a florist in the delivery area and pay by debit or credit card over the phone. These companies make their money on the relay charges, anything from £3.50 up, and you don’t get anything for that money. Last year on Watchdog there was a company who say took an order for £35, then passed it onto a florist in the delivery area for a £15 bouquet.
Use Yell.com, find a florist where you want the flowers delivered and give them the order. Make sure though you ask if they will relay the order or deliver it themselves.0 -
I have to say, being a girly it is awfully nice being sent flowers. However my OH gave me a box of promises last Valentines Day (he got the idea from another MSE'r), all handwritten and rolled up in a lovely red box!
The promises included cooking my favourite meal, a foot massage, a summertime picnic with the kids, candlelit bath etc.etc.
I think this is such a lovely idea, much more personal and shows how much he thinks of me!
Everyone say 'awwwwww'!

Buy Kenyan roses from M&S.
They're not expensive, but your purchase will make a world of difference to the Kenyan growers. Commercial flower growing in Kenya has steadily developed over the past 10 years and has given a huge boost to the local economy. Isn't that a heart-warming thought?0 -
