These are sweaters and shirts made into christmas stockings and theyare beautiful, I assume you could sew them up with backstitch like when you are knitting, you coulk try blanket stitching the seams to prevent frayinghttp://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/stocking-up?lnc=cd1eab78367ee010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=lpg_kids&lpgStart=1&currentslide=11&currentChapter=1

replacement covers for swiffer type brooms and mops are so expensive that this link shows one made from an old fleece http://flickr.com/photos/merwing/2044345041/in/pool-craft/but there are others if you search for knitted, felt, wool and cotton ones,

Just had a rummage in my wardrobe and found a cardigan that I washed and it went a bit 'hard' if you know what I mean. Maybe it'll do for a shopping bag but not sure how to do the handles unless I plait some cord and stitch them to the bottom of the bag on the outside seams. And will it be ok if I blanket stitched it ?

Blanket stitch sould help stop the fraying, if it is made of 100% wool then too hot water will felt it and then it feels kind of stiff, this should be great for a bag as it is tougher than in it's original state. The cord may stretch if load is heavy, so try and see and start with a light load and gradually increase the weight untill you get the feeling they are growing longer!!

she grinch - thanks. Wasn't sure how else I could do the handles unless I used something a bit like webbing but think that would be hard to sew.
I'll have a poke about in the spare room.........might be a bag or two there I don't use anymore that I can take the handle off (have a weakness for bags.........lol)

My weakness is for heeled shoes! I can't actually walk or drive in them so they collect in boxes much to my DH annoyance, trouble is I dream of one day having a job where I could actually wear them, but as I run our garden centre it isn't really going to happen any time soon haha

    she grinch...........:rotfl: and I thought I was bonkers....................lol
Now you'll have to find some way of recycling them to justify buying them .........(boxes always handy - I get a load (well about 6), cover them with pretty paper and use them for christmas and birthday pressies, easier to post..........and the boxes are free (even better!):j
