Panasonic TH-42PZ85B: Currys pricematch?

Ok, I think we finally decided to update our TV. We still have 20" CRT, which we bought second hand 5 years ago!

I really like Panasonic PZ85. We can't go for more than 42". Initially thought of stopping at 37", but thought maybe plasma would be better (better picture?), and we decided to go for a full HD. What do people here think? Is it a good choice?

We saw it today at Comet for just under £800. But the code is put as TH-42PZ85BA.
Next door, at Currys they have it for just under £1000 and the code is TH-42PZ85B. Now, I am sure it is the same TV, and Currys do 110% price match, which means, theoretically, I could get the TV for ~£780, which is cheaper than PZ80.

The salesman at Comet was trying to push us a Samsung (can't remember the model, probably this one). Is it a better one to go for?... He was adamant that Samsungs are much better than Panasonics, and he wouldn't listen to anything about reliability, reviews or anything else (probably on good commision?)

Try johnlewis.co.uk free five year warrenty and top C/S or dixons.co.uk some good deals both better than the clowns at comet!
If you get the tv go on domestic and general web site for a quote BEFORE you get an extened warrenty from anywhere else.

John Lewis don't stock PZ85 model.

I suppose what I am trying to find out is if Currys will pricematch the Comet price, even though Comet attached an extra letter to the product code? I do want to buy it from the store, not online, as I am never at home when deliveries happen and I don't feel like paying for delivery when I can get just as good price in store!

Get the Panasonic plasma. You will not regret it. I have the previous gen 50". Best thing I ever bought. Better than any LCD. Maybe on par with the top end sony X series - but that was still utter crap for normal TV.

I would buy nothing but a Pioneer or Panasonic plasma for my main viewing tv.

I've just got the PX80B and it is as fantastic as all the reviews I read before buying. I did get a box marked PX80BA, which one website or forum post said the extra A was just Panasonic's method of marking minor internal improvements since the model was first released, but it's the same TV.

I second that - Panasonic are a great brand.

I nearly bought a Samsung but went for a Panny instead - so glad I did.

Just a question popped in my head - we can't get freeview here (poor aerial signal, even some normal channels are not perfect), how will analogue signal work when I will blow up the picture to 42"?

  • The UK panasonic website shows the TH-42PZ85B model, but the official panasonic shop shows the TH-42PZ85BA model.

    Go figure.

I found that too. I have no problem buying from Comet, but would like extra £20 off ;)

Its usual, that if you have an awful freeview reception, then the analogue will look better (not GREAT obviously, but not as bad as having horrible digital ' blocks' everywhere)
But if course, once analogue is switched off (Which may be VERY soon depending on where you live) then thats dead in the water anyways (The plus side being that the freeview signal will be boosted)
If the signals THAT poor, id be thinking about getting freesat. Or if you want to stick with freeview, get 2 or even 3 aerials on the roof fed with the BEST aerial cable (Double shielded)
For know it might be worth trying out a 'strong' signal booster
