Car workers on £13–14,000 a month – true???

I saw in an article in the Guardian today that this was what car workers at the Nissan plant were used to being paid. It cannot be true, can it?
If it is, no wonder the plant (possibly the industry as a whole if pay like this is the norm) is in so much trouble.
That is the annual salary for many people.

No that's bollox! Rover production line workers got between £500 to £600 a week. I would imagine that Nissen workers got something similar or a little less.0 -
The Guardian are well known for their errors.
It's likely to be a monthly salary.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Its not really a skilled job and the plant was in Sunderland, sounds about right.
*Sorry that its £13-14k a year. Or maybe £1300 a month, did you misread it?0 -

"It's going to be very hard for those lads, going from £12,000-£13,000 a month to benefits. And what's happened at Nissan will happen at their suppliers, you watch."
article in question is located at http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/jan/10/nissan-job-cuts-sunderland-redundancies
Must be a mistake!0 -
In 2003 the Guardian said "The workers earn between £14,000 and £36,000 a year."

It can't have changed much since then.0 -

Honest, I never read the Sunday Sport guv.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
