800 were on a 12 month contract to meet demand of the new qashqai, the other 400 were temps. Hope this helps.

    Hi

Nissan sunderland workers among highest paid in the business but they work for it.

Just touching on the 1200 jobs that are going.

800 were on a 12 month contract to meet demand of the new qashqai, the other 400 were temps. Hope this helps.

The same has happend at Jaguar Landrover, they say they have got rid of 800 staff but most of them are agency or temps.

Ive worked on production lines and unless you have done it you wouldnt know how bad it is, these people deserve all the money they get.

These firms wanted agency or temps in the first place so they could get rid of them at the drop of a hat, gone are the days of these big car manafacturers taking new staff on and giving them full contracts.

At Land Rover they treated the agency staff really bad, they used to lay them off at christmas and the summer holidays, so they didnt have to take them on, as it would count as a break in their employment.

I think a lot of these firms had the agency staff in place waiting for this to happen, and now they are going to lay it on thick about laying staff of that arent even full time employees, and they have even got the cheek to try and get some money of the government.

Its wrong really but you can not blame them for trying.

Ive got a friend that works at jaguar land rover and the assembly workers are on about 25,000 pound a year.

He was saying last week though they were going to offer a enhanced redundency package for workers, which could add up to nearly 100, 000 pound for each worker.

I know it doesnt help the supply chain companies connected to jaguar land rover, but it certainly helps the workers, that work for jaguar landrover.

Surely it would be better for the company to put them on garden leave for 2 years than pay 4 years salary.

I think his figures might be wrong. My mate at Nissan says they are talking about £9,000 for the permanent who will go.

As has been posted already though, he says mosts are agency or tems.

As far as I know, the 600 full time JLR employees who took voluntary redundancy last year were given 9 months. Could be wrong though.
My OH was one of the 850 agency staff that was so uncermoniously dumped.
The media were reporting it before the agency staff were officially told.
    Not good.

Yeah thats the january deal now 600 full time staff 198 went in decmeber 2008, but the one 2 years ago, when freelander went to liverpool, then there was the enhanced package i know the father in law took it and he had been on permenant nights and had been there 30 years he walked out with nearly 96000 pound.

One of my mates had 21000 pound which was the 9 months package in december , the thing is they have asked for more volunteers on the same package, but not a lot of people will take it beacause they know there was massive payouts 2 years ago.

I dont blame people for not taking 21000, its not even a years pay, and if you look at history any car plant that as had closure the workers have been given out massive payouts, i know rover got the basic deal, but they were bankrupt, do you think if tata close the plants they will stop making the cars??? i doubt it.

  • Hi

I actually work at the Nissan car plant and the basic annual salary for a line worker is approx £22k. As for the 1200 workers to be made redundant, 400 are temps and the other 800 are full time employees. As far as i am aware there are no staff on 12 month contracts, just temps and full timers.

We dont know who will be made redundant out of the full time workers or what the redundancy package is yet. I think it will be announced by the end of this week.

    Hope this answers your questions.

I'm not saying you're wrong confused, but I don't undertand how JLR/Tata can afford/justify giving people 4 years salary.
I'd have thought it defeats the whole object of getting rid of people?!

A lot of that money would have been his pension if he took early retirement (which presumably he did after 30 years service.)

theyve always give good payouts at car plants, i think they do it to keep everyone sweet, i mean i dont think Land Rover will close they make all the military vehicles for this country and a lot of other countries.

Now they might not offer 100,000 pound but i can honestly see them paying 50,000 pound to get rid of some workers who work at Landrover, its cheaper for them to do that than put them on gardeners leave.

The father in law did have some of his pension in the lump some, and he still gets over 200 pound a week pension.

  • I can't see Nissan giving a good pay out like you've just mentioned. At the end of the day they are only obligated to give us 1 week's pay for every year worked, anything above that is a bonus. They are going down the voluntary route first so i guess the package will have to be pretty attractive to get any takers, but i very much doubt the figure will be any where near the figure you just mentioned.
