    Hi all

Thanks for your comments.. now I don't feel guilty about holidays. We always do our holidays on the cheap too (camping in Brittany) and driving ourselves to a ski holiday instead of flying and booking an apartment ourselves instead of booking through a travel company. This has saved thousands!

Any tips on where to go doing it this way??? We can't seem to find anyway of doing it that under cuts the tour operators.

I use https://www.holidaylettings.co.uk to find accomodation abroad, its quite good for apartments in tourist areas but it depends what you are looking for.

Yes - I was going to suggest holidaylettings or ownersdirect. Just google them and they'll pop up. We got a ski apartment for 4 in La Plagne, France over xmas 2008 for £550. Driving to the resort including the tunnel, tolls, petrol and an overnight stop added maybe another £500 but if we'd gone by plane with a tour company it would have been nearer £2.5K. Using the car we were able to load it up with loads of food and most of our xmas presents too!:j Planning on doing the same this xmas to Alpe d'huez so currently researching suitable apartments and working out how to save for it! For our Brittany holiday in August we're going with Canvas holidays and it's costing just over £1000 for a week in a mobile home on a camp site with loads of activities suitable for families and teenagers. It would have been even cheaper in a tent but I do like a little luxury!:rotfl:

    Oh joy...
Apparently Barclays have a new scheme whereby every time you make an overpayment, they send you a letter thanking you, as a receipt.

Now when I am in full overpayment mode, I go online each day and round the "total owing" down as much as I feel I can afford, even if its is only a pound or two. That is going to be a lot of letters.

I phoned Barclays and they are canvassing customer opinion so hopefully they will stop soon. I hope...

  • How annoying.

Butlins do that to me too, I can pay anything from £5, so when I book I make small payments every week, and every small payment generates another letter!

    #63 here.

We are overpaying by £200 each month at the moment.
There is a large sum coming in next month, and over half of it we will use to pay off some of the morgage. Also, I am using the "council tax" from the next 2 month to pay in extra.

THis year is an expensive one for us, as there are lot of family trips to Germany. I've already booked most of them last night,, to get cheaper deals, but oh my, is it a lot!

Husband also just started a new job and is getting paid less. So I have to re-sort budget etc.

Well done to everyone so far!
