Oh well done Ninky. How did you manage that much?

    thanks for the support guys.

basically i'm self employed and i use my mortgage account to pay as much into as possible over the year including any money that is tax liability. as i'd paid so much on account from the previous year and then actually earned less than predicted i had quite a bit more left over that didn't need to go to the tax man. need to watch out though as next year it'll be a big tax year again as my earnings look like being up.

    Hi all

Thanks for your comments.. now I don't feel guilty about holidays. We always do our holidays on the cheap too (camping in Brittany) and driving ourselves to a ski holiday instead of flying and booking an apartment ourselves instead of booking through a travel company. This has saved thousands!

My children only really became brand aware at senior school. For years they were perfectly happy with hand me downs or car boot bargains, ebay purchases etc. DD13 is not bothered about labels and will happily shop at Primark or New Look. DS16 is worse though and wants branded clothes and shoes. Luckily he has a part time job and often pays himself. He has definitely learnt the value of money but just wastes ours by spending hours in the shower, not turning lights off etc....!
Hoping to retire earlier than 67!

Lol..at the comment...your son being good with his money but wasting yours ..typical.
  • taxi i think geocaching was explained quite well. We look at www.geocaching.com in an area we want to go walking to find co-ordinates for 'treasure'. We then go out as a family to locate it. Basically, it gives you a reason to get out and about in places you want to when you wouldn't otherwise be inclined.

They are mostly near places of interest (historic sites, areas of beauty) and can be a small film cannister that you sign a log to say you have found, or a larger tupperware box filled with items that are mostly cracker items in the ones i have found. We got into it in September, and then went out a lot on our cheap holiday in October, and have had a couple more days out at it since. We plan on doing more when we go on our cheapo centre parcs hol next month. We really enjoy it.

ninky thanks for the info. We cashed in ISAs to do a large sum last year, so i was curious as to how you were doing it.

My challenge is proving a bit tricky this month. Although i am trying to be good and not spend, and joined the frugal living challenge, the christmas credit card bill has hit us for 6. Then DH tells me his car is playing up and will need looking at. It only had £400 spent on it last month. I feel like i am juggling a bit. My efforts with reducing energy and food bills are small fry when big bills appear like that. It is much harder now i am not working to do the overpayments, but i would not go back to how it was. We'll muddle through it as always.

More reading MSE and finding super cheap ways to feed and entertain the kids then. I guess January is always hard if i think about it and looking at last January's spends at least i am doing better than that. :rotfl:

    Thanks..sounds fun.
The good thing about this challenge is that as it's 3 years for the challenge we have loads of time to catch up .

I will look like I'm way behind on my challlenge as I'm trying to pay all the CC debt off this year.So am paying my normal payments and £500p/m into regualer saver and a bit more here and therebut once the CCS are gone I can pay loads more to the challenge and in 2011 two of my loans finish..so I can pay that amount in as well.

Of course I also need the snow to clear so that I can go to work and earn some money.
