What no claims bonus did you declare to Direct Line when you took out cover.

Did you declare to DL that your father also has another car

My dad has 9 years no claims and he is aware that if I crash that will be reduced.

If your dad has 9 years no claims bonus on his other car insurance which is still insured. Then he does not have any no claims bonus to use on this second car.

DL will at some point ask for proof of his no claims bonus which if it's being used on the other car he will not be able to provide. When this becomes evident DL will increase the premium by circa 130%.

You only earn one no claims bonus per policy, if your dad's using it on his other car then he cannot use it on your car

Your father has made the same mistake many parents make when insuring their children.

Is the DL premium still competitive with nil no claims bonus?

I'm fairly sure that DL give you a certain number of days after receiving the full policy documentation to cancel without paying anything more than an admin charge. I'm not sure whether that's a statutory requirement or not - but worth checking.

This would give you a chance to check what impact zero no claims (and possibly you as Main Driver if you want to remove any possibility of your dad being accused of fronting) will have, and if it's more than you can afford, cancel it.

Well thanks for all the help.

Spoke with my dad and looks like I'm going to have to ring them and cancel the policy as I understand they will not cover us with 0 NCB on my dad and a first time driver on named.

All I want to do is drive my new car man. I cant find a policy cheap enough with me as main driver though. I was so looking forward to driving, but looks like I just threw a bunch of money down the drain.

Ah, this is interesting? So I could wait till I receive the documentation, Tax the car and then cancel the insurance? Because then I could just borrow a bucket load of money for my first initial payment on another policy.

I was unaware that they would actually refund the money.
