Thats funny that, i can go on experian right now and it will tell me who is the registered keeper of that vehicle along with their address.

Do i need to supply a reason... no. but it does cost the company money a few quid.

Indeed, but which insurers do this at point of sale? None I know of.
  • Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this site, but this thread seems quite appropriate to my situation.

I am trying to lease a car but have some credit blips that are creating me issues. My brother, (who is also my business partner) has said he will lease the car in question and in principle the prop has been accepted.

Unfortunately my brother does not have a driving license and therefore cannot get insured on the car, but as the car is for me, are there any options for me to get insured on it???

I have thought about business insurance, is that an option??

    Can anyone please help?? :)

Have a simiar situation. Spouse has leased car - dunno who owns it though think prob leasing co. He insures it and I am named driveron Policy. My spouse is Registered Keeper of my car only because he signed paperwork when we bought the car seconhand. I am the Policy holder and he is a named driver on the Policy.
I am the Registered keeper of the car my daughter drives ( and I still own it, have not transfered private reg) she is the Policy holder and I am a named driver on her policy.
We all live at the same address and the cars are kept here.
Have wondered about this as search engines ask these questions.
Was under impression that problems arose when Insurance Company need to know who the main driver of the car will be - not the owner or keeper.
Can someone please clarify as I am just about to renew Insurance and don't want to find problems in a claim. Thanks in advance.

As far as a leased vehicle is concerned the only thing you nee dto be carefull of is that the insurers are aware of the fact its leased. the registered owner of the vehicle in this instance would be the leasing company and that question needs to be answered correctly...not all insurers will cover such a risk tho many will.

As for the manner in which you insure your other cars it looks fine, bigger problems arise if the insurance policy isnt in your daughters name as that could be classed as fronting but the ownership in this instance shouldnt be an issue as your all coming from the same address.....best bet in any situation like these is to be up front with insurers and they will advise what and isnt acceptable to them

we ask, "who is the legal owner / registered keeper?"
if not the ph then it can be spouse or partner only.
Private lease is slightly different, but anything else is a definate no. if someone is the owner but not looking to insure we would seriously question why? if someone else is the main driver (and not spouse or partner) we would only cover it on the basis that ownership is transfered to the main driver

Sorry to,drag old topic up, the wonders of google.

I want to insure 2nd car in my partners name so can start building NCB.

So would it make the insurance cheaper to make my partner the registered keeper or keep myself as the registered keeper?

There's no need to have it in another name, if you have two cars you can have two separate sets of NCD going, both in your name.

Generally, if the registered keeper, the legal owner, the main driver and the policyholder are all the same person, that would be a lower risk policy than one with 4 different people (yes - it is possible), but each company will have their own criteria.

But you must be scrupulously honest with the insurance companies about who these 4 people are, or else the policy could be voided.

    Usually makes no difference.
I've insured my wife's car for years, she insures mine.

Comparison sites assume you are the registered keeper and owner.

Some companies may refuse to cover and some may add an additional charge.

If its a spouse then it probably wont make any difference.

When its another family member or a non family member they have to wonder why its not registered to the insurer.
