Gentle PLEA to use Tesco codes sensibly

Sorry, you mis-understand me. I too agree with the OP
Use of codes is not a problem in itself, but fraudulent use of codes is!
Legal use of codes created to increase Tesco custom (and hence profit) is ok, but there is no point Tesco supplying goods free of charge - or way below cost price. Such abuse will result as the OP suggests in Tesco (and other retailers) not issuing such codes in the future and probably stopping the use of existing codes where they are being abused or used fraudulently.
My point was purely that you may only consider the item you receive for nothing, or a few pennies, only retails at £10 but that is £10 lost revenue and if you order nothing else then what is the benefit to Tesco? It is the same as a shoplifter walking into Tesco and taking the £10 item. It may seem insignificant in terms of the £millions profit Tesco generate per year, but Tesco will take action against such abuse of codes as they do against shoplifters."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

CopperPlate wrote:Well, I think you'll find that you are gaining an advantage to which you are not entitled to given that you are not following the terms and conditions of the coupon/voucher, etc. You are not - correction, we are not - complying with the terms because the voucher will likely stipulate it is not transferrable, cannot be used by another individual etc, etc. In essence we are obtaining an advantage by "deceiving" another - be that a computer or otherwise - and that is the essence of fraud. If you went into a shop and attempted to pass yourself off as the genuine holder of a gift voucher which you knew you were not entitled to possess or use, and you know that you are not entitled to use/possess it, then you might not like it, but technically, it is fraud. You are actively seeking someone to disadvantage themselves in some form or other whilst at the same time obtain an advantage for yourself.
You can not deceive a computer.
Sounds like you are trying to give out legal advice?!
This post IS VERY funny - and more than a little naive.
All the best0 -
Slightly OT: Does anyone know where the £10 off £75 codes orginate from in the first place?
I've seen tons of £5 off £50 and there was one in this months Prima baby (xx y9ff) btw, but have never come across the others."I did then, what I knew then. And when I knew better, I did better"0 -

And as I know that I am right, I won't take offence
It sounds like someone splitting hairs I have to say - I did put deceive in quotation marks which, to me anyway, implies that it was not to be taken as a literal.
And no, I'm not giving out legal advice because I'm not qualified to give legal "advice" - not the kind you would want anyway...
And I don't think I'm being naive either. I'd be really interested to know what part of the post made you think I was being naive and which part seems to have generated such a degree of humour
I think naivety is believing Tesco will not take some form of action to curb losses stemming from the abuse of its voucher/coupon system. It's already reined in the paper coupon policy it operated in-store. Take a look around the other threads and you'll see plenty evidence of companies taking a harder line with consumers who are taking the proverbial by abusing the system of vouchers, etc. La Redoute, Sainsburys, etc.

I do think we are getting confused with "fraud" and obtaining goods by deception. The latter includes the computer for the offence. Fraud does not contain the part about deceiving a machine.
At the end of the day I think Copperplate is in agreement that they use the codes but beware of the consequences.
I do totally agree with smartsaver, as well. No one is trying to offend other posters quite the opposite. No Matter what you do there will be critics.0 -
Thanks Spender. I think we could go on quoting definitions and get quite sidetracked from the OP.
[I've deleted the Scots Common Law definition of Fraud and Section 7 of Tesco.com T&C's as it's only going to keep this debate going]
And yes, I am in total agreement with the OP.

The Tesco on-line codes are an absolute life saver for me. I've got 2 small children and I'm on my own etc etc... These codes not only save me up to £15 a week off (when I'm v lucky) my bill but it also enables me to use the home delivery service which I could not afford to do every week. So not only do I save money off my shop (usually it's just a fiver off covering delivery) but I don't have to drag the children round the supermarket for an hour or use any petrol! (Good news for the environment too!)
I'm sure Tesco's are very aware of how these codes are being used and the people that do their stats for them can analyse the benefits of them on their profit margin! Of course there will be some people who do not use these codes fairly but I'm sure they are in the minority.
I think Tesco's are fab and give a great delivery and on-line shopping service and the code thing is just a bonus that keeps people like us coming back and using their service and promoting their company.
More codes please Tescos, we think you're great!Expect less and get more...0 -

Even more reason to take it slowly...
I am starting a thread suggesting we declare the source of all codes...0
