so do I.. though I usually just bash the edge of the lid on the worktop.. that twists the lid slightly so breaks the seal.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
A safer way than a knife (I'd stab myself!!) is to use the bottle opener end of a cheapo, old type metal tin opener. Like others said, it will make a pop.0

Now sorted thanks
Please can anyone help? I have two jars of bottled plums (le parfait glass jars with the rubber seal) and I cannot open them. DH has tried too so brute force is not the issue (!) and the one he tried has a big chip out of the glass top disk now (the knife slipped).
They are in a small sink covered in hot water at the moment...
All ideas welcome. I can't bring myself to throw them away
Thanks

I used an Oil Filter wrench, the rubber one, not the chain one. Could just pop along to those nice guys in orange and try it, could be for free,

Aha! Mums know best - spurred by your boiling water suggestion, she suggested putting them in the simmer oven of the range for half an hour and they have just popped off with no trouble.
Thanks for the suggestion.:TSave £12k in 2026 #2 I have banked £2870.61 so far, against a £10k target The 2026 Save £12k in 2026 thread is here

Thanks, but when you get several tons of fruit in a season, you just can't make that much crumble in one month- hence the need to preserve them (and freezers were already full). I wanted them for crumble today though!

I know you have sorted it now but I have found the perfect thing for opening stuck lids and the like.
You can by rolls of grip mats in Poundland or the 99p shops.
I cut mine into sheets to fit onto lap trays and also use these if I can't open a jar, they give a brilliant grip.
I hold the bottom of the jar in one of these and the wrap another one around the lid so you are getting double the grip.
I use these too when I can't get the back of a mobile phone.

If I can't find my rubber gloves I'll make a long thin 'sausage' out of blutak and wind that round the edge of the lid and round the jar. rubber bands are supposed to do the job too, but I can never find any of those when I want them.0
