wrap the lid in a slightly damp towl or teacloth and turn it.

and/or tap the top lightly (dont break the glass!)

I always find it helps if you put rubber gloves on - it gives you a lot more grip.

You could try it with a rubber glove on to get better grip?

If you have no other way to get the lid off then puncturing the lid with the end of a knife (or something similar) will break the seal and you should be able to get the lid off then. This will of course mean you need to keep the jar in the fridge and eat the contents sooner, but with gherkins as long as they are covered in the vinegar they should be fine.

    It's only a game

If you have a bottle opener, this can be used to break the vacuum, then it should be much easier to undo. I use a "jar key" which I think came from lakeland, but the bottle opener is a good substitute in an emergency.

    Hope this helps.

Let hot water from your tap run over the metal cap for a minute and it will come off easy.

There is a new gadget out, which I think I'm gonna get. I have the "one touch" can opener, and love it, it makes life so easy!
They have now produced a "One Touch" Jar Opener,if it's as easy to use, it will be a godsend! :)

Yep, I always find this the best way except I usually use water from the kettle. Had to do it yesterday with a jar of HM Marrow Chutney!

I usually run it under a hot tap, then if it still won't open I gently throw it against the couch which helps to loosen it. Then I use a towel or some rubber gloves to undo it.
