I was recently looking for a new contract and phone and there certainly weren't as many 'give away offers' as there used to be.

This is the one I went for:

It worked out at £59.88 for the year plus it's CPW so plenty of opportunity for going through a cashback site and getting another £20-£30 cashback against that. Trouble is of course it is a bit girlie, I had to pay a lot more per month for a more masculine phone on contract for my OH.

This one is totally free, and you can make a profit if you go via Greasypalm or Quidco:

  • Not as many excellent deals out there as last year - but still plenty. A few more may start appearing soon - as networks start pushing out commissions.

    Motorola V220 -free 12 months - £20profit through Quidco

    Nokia 3120 - free 12 months - £20 profit through Quidco

Hope that helps - don't forget the excellent Reestit Mutton site for deals.
  • Not meaning to sound stupid or anything, but do these 12months free things actually work? How do the phone companies afford to do it? Is it not some kind of scam? I'm very tempted by loads of them, as if you remember to do the cashback, then you may as well get some free phones even if you then sell the phones on, but don't wanna end up in debt cos it's a scam.

The dealer who sells you the phone will get a commission payment from the network for signing you up. Some of that commission is passed back to you in the form of cashback from the dealer. Some inducement, usually in the form of line rental reduction for a period, is offered to you directly from the network.

These are not scams. But, there are some companies that are more adept at giving the cashback than others. Some make it extremely difficult to claim the cashbacks. You need to observe the small print and follow the claims procedure to the letter.

You can sell the handset on if you wish as it is yours to do so. However, you would of course retain the SIM card for the duration of the contract for which you will be liable to pay.
  • So therefore I could get one of these 12months free deals, sell the phone (get about £30), get £20 from Quidco and just use the free mins, get my cashback and end up with about £50 profit altogether as long as I do the cashback right. So why don't more people do this?

    Yes to the first part.

I don't why more people don't do it.
  • seen a couple of good deals now (need at least 400 Xnet mins) through the various links posted so thanks for those. 1 with 3 mobile shop & 1 with the mobile outlet, does anybody know how long these have been about & how likely i am to get my cash back. the last 2 years have been fine with osps & cpwh..
