Log in as administrator on XP

Options
Please can somebody tell me about the administrator in windows XP? Do I need to set a password to use and when do I log in as an administrator? How do I find my username password, I cannot remember whether I set one? I was in such a hurry to set up the new PC, I cannot remember what I did and whether I did indeed set in a password with the username. Also, it's so annoying, the path of a document e.g C\settings\and username. How do I get rid of the username, I do not want my username in all the documents settings. There are so many password to remember and I am getting confused. At present, when I am in safe mode, I only click on username and it lets me in, no password required. I am very new to windows XP, and having an e-manual does not seem to help. Thanks.

  • The original account you set up when you first got your computer is by default an administrator.

Go.... Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts and you should be able to see what accounts are on your machine. You can then change passwords etc in there.

I can see the administrator and then user account with my name but cannot remember whether I did set a password and if I did, cannot remember what the password is? I do not think I have logged in as an administrator. Thanks for your help.

When you click on your account username to login normally does it ask for a password?

If you have Windows XP Home, the built-in administrator account is only accessible from Safe Mode. You can't access it from the normal mode of windows.

I do not think I have set in any password because when I click on username in safe mode, it let me in, did not aks for password. When not in safe mode, I can log in by just connecting to btyahoo dial up using my password. I think, I did chose not to set in a password with my username as I do not want too many password to remember. It's only myself and my immediate family who use it. Thanks for your help.

You seem to be confusing Windows login with logging in to your dial up account.

When you load Windows normally, i.e. not in safe mode, do you get the blue Welcome screen which shows your username or does it go straight onto the desktop? If it goes straight onto the desktop then you only have one user account set up on your computer and you have no password set.

Logging into BT Yahoo is nothing to do with Windows passwords. Here you have a username and password for your Internet Provider, in this case BT Yahoo.

Why were you in safe mode by the way?

Also, don't forget your internet connection username and passwords are most likely different to that of your windows login and password.

It goes straight into the desktop, I guess, you are right I am confusing windows log in with my internet log in. I have not set any password yet because it s not asking me for one. I was in safe mode to scan the computer with sypbot search and destroy.

You don't need a password if you don't want one. If you do ever want a password you can go into Control Panel, User Accounts and set one up anytime.

You asked earlier about your username being in the path of a document and how you could get rid of it. Basically you can't - its how XP works. If you set up other user accounts each user would have its own documents settings etc.
