As an instance of what? No advice was given - I used the imperative tense.

People who perpetuate that one should rely on savings as a source of income are giving some of the poorest investment advice there is.

    Ah, so you're tense now.

And to answer the OP - I think the banks will offer decent ISA deals in April, if for no other reason than to try and attract savings into their accounts for either of the tax years 07/08 or 08/09. But that is only my opinion.

Seriously, isn't there a case for a EPI(Essentials Price Index) to sit alongside CPI and RPI? It would measure the rise and fall in costs associated with goods and services that are essential (or unavoidable) to living a normal life. EPI should be the index that is used to determine the level of state pensions each year and the one quoted to the masses as an indication of cost of living rises.

    Maybe:

    Oops, thank you:o .
  • A friend mentioned something like government matching, say, like, 50p for each pound saved, in ISA's from April 2009. Can anyone confirm, deny, or more likely speculate (I think it sounds nuts, but hey, the whole financial mess is nuts).

It was in the pre budget report. Those on extremely low income will get money for putting their money into savings.

It is nuts. Again the prudent and sensible end up bailing out the reckless and careless. Really annoys me what this government are doing.

To be fair to the government, it is a serious social ill that those on poor incomes or on benefits do not save any money. But equally well, it's unrealistic to expect them to do so when benefit levels are set at a subsistence level.

Savings Gateway, IMHO, just benefits those who are on benefits who have partners earning more money than them who can hence take advantage of the tax-free cash. It is poorly targeted and ill-conceived.
