i bought a mondeo last month and it only has one key. foolishly i didn't insist on the dealer (not a ford franchisee) getting a second one made up as i thought it'd be not hugely expensive.

Ford wanted £130 for a new coded remote key... i've ended up buying a new remote fob and key blade from ebay (who also cut the blade for me) and a local auto electrics shop is coding the transponder for me. total cost £50, which isn't cheap but a heck of a lot better than £130. this also means that in future i'll be able to code my own keys, as i now have two of them.
  • With regards to obtaining a second key and remote fob for a Vauxhall Astra Mk4 this is my research

    1. Local main dealer Crownhill Milton Keynes - £140 (fob, blade and reprogramming). It would another £20 if I had'nt had the car pass.
    2. Timpson - £100 + VAT (fob,blade and reprogramming).
    3. Tempson again - £70 + VAT if I supplied (fob,blade and reprogramming)From Ebay.
    4. Second nearest Main dealer in Flitwick - £90 (fob, blade and reprogramming). It would another £20 if I had'nt had the car pass.
The spare\replacement key has now been sorted.
I found a local locksmith in the Milton Keynes area who supplied the whole key (remote fob, blade and Transponder) with programming came to £75. I am not sure if he would have charged me more if I didn't have the car pass.
  • I have just bought a Ford Focus, registered Nov 1999.

It only came with one key.

    Does anyone know...

How much would this cost to get a new one cut, and what would be the cheapest way of going about this?
  • I have a Mondeo with a normal key and the button key.

The open button has just broken so I need a new button key.

If I get one from eBay does it then need to be cut? (EDIT: I can just take the top of the fob off with the key part, so don't need anything cutting.) Most for sale on there are used. Does this make a difference?

Also, if I reprogram it, how does that affect the immobiliser? Is the chip in the button part or the top part that comes off?

Thanks for setting right an idiot.
  • I bought a ford focus recently with only one key (not the master Key).
Most key cutters can only copy this key to open the doors but not to start the engine.
Thinking it shouldn't be too expensive Ford quoted me £120 to get one copy (ouch!). I eventually found a key cutters in Muswell Hill that did it for £65, just for the key and not the remote control fob. Best deal I could find.

It's the rip off factor, that is annoying. Even if they have to plug a handheld computer to your car for a new key after supplying ownership proof the cost should not be more than 25 pounds.

"Vauxhall/Renault/Citroen/Volkswagen/Peugeot/et al's policy on providing new keys coded to your cars immobiliser, do they all do it for free?"
You tell me, and whilst you're at it find out about Mitsu, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Jaguar, Proton, Smart, Mercedes.

Just seen this thread, and in answer to the above,I recently had to pay nearly £200 for a Mercedes key from the Dealer-no alternative possible-I well Googled it.And yes,I only had one key,but V5 and proof of identity needed.
