I can nly speak for my Vauxhall Astra, but I bought a fob key off Ebay, got a new cut, which allowed me use it as a standard key.

I then reporgrammed the key, using info off the net and now it works for £18! instead of £110 the dealship wanted!

We are talking here about a key capable of starting the car when an unwritten blank key cannot start the car, i.e. the car has an immobiliser built in and only the correct key starts the car?

As opposed to you just had the remote central locking device copied?
  • It's looking likely that you can buy a blank key (and fob if required) off ebay, take it to the dealership and they can only charge you labour costs as you are supplying your own key.
This goes for us unfortuantes who only have one key at the moment.

Ahh. Now I understand. Mind you, the only time you'd normally get a spare key cut is when you've lost one.

Well done for telling Ford owners this info. I won't be buying Ford.

I have found out that Mitsubishi will supply a new key for 50 quid. I don't know if it can be done for that price without any key but if you have one key, then that's the price.

The info about recoding the keys for Fords is handily printed in what is know as 'the manual' located more often than not in a recepticle called 'the glovebox'. Not hidden away in some dealership only information away frompublic knowledge.
  • Anyone any idea how much it costs to get a key programmed at the ford dealership if you have your own key and fob?
