    Hi
Just had a look at WMP, Go to Tools, Options, Rip Music, Change Format to MP3, you can also decide what quality you want, and move bar accordingly and don't forget to click Apply.
    Should work now, hopefully

beat me to it i was going to say the same

I've been helping my brother-in-law with a brand new Dell Media Centre PC, and he gets the same error. I set the options on first startup of WMP10, including the rip options as described above. I tried downloading, reinstalling and rebooting without success. He is currently using his daughter's iTunes as his default ripper, but would prefer to use WMP as its tightly wrapped into the Media Centre programme.

I think the problem is that his son got in there first with the software for his Sony MP3 player before the BiL started using WMP10, and that has registered something incorrectly in the registry. (This is after scouring the M$ tech areas, which suggest the problem without a solution  ).

I'm happy browsing and updating the registry (after taking the appropriate precautions), but the problem is I can't find anything obvious that looks wrong. Anyone got any ideas...?

Thanks for trying, I had already changed the option under tools, so I guess my issue must be something similar to charlieheard's

You could try uninstalling MediaPlayer and any MP3 player software etc. Then run CCleaner in 'scan for issues' mode in addition to normal mode. This should remove any traces of the programs that might be left behind. Then do a fresh install of WMP and afterwards any additional MP3 software you might have.

I have been using that, but my free trial runs out in 4 days, so I thought I'd investigate the free one first.

I can't rememebr what I need to pay for the dbpoweramp one.

How do you get it as free?

CDex is another very good and free ripper. It comes with the LAME encoder inbuilt, which is one of the better (or best) mp3 encoder to use.

You simply put the cd in, click the get cddb info (as it'll tag your tracks upon ripping) and click go.
