how much for after school care?

i have an opportunity to increase my hours at work, i am thinking that my parents / MIL (who are retired) will do some after school care for me, taking it in turns- but i want do it with a reward rather than the usual do it for the usual free fee . it would be for an hour and a half on a school day.

before approaching for a formal agreement i want to have a figure in mind to offer, and i just haven't got a clue what to offer. i have 2 usually well behaved children btw.

any ideas?

  • I pay £6 for 3pm-5:30pm for 1 child at an after school club - if that helps at all

Think it would be better to use childminder/after school care. No problems with deciding on an amount and more formal. Also retired parents may not wish to be restricted, they will want to take holidays but not want to let you down. They probably won't want to take money from you anyway. For the extra pay you'll receive, after deductions, it may not even pay you to work the extra hours after you've paid for childcare!

the problem is that there is no after school care here, the children are in a very small rural school - and i have yet to find a childminder ( in the last 2 years) who is willing to do a pick up from this school due to its location. my mil is more than happy to help me regulary, she is very family orientated and quite frankly would love to be asked- but i want to give her an income as she struggles financially on her pension as it is, there are other considerations too - she lives alone and is lonely, and is often here anyway just for the company.

My DD pays £9 for after school and that includes a pick-up from her school to the club premises and a small tea. It's a good idea to have more than one carer so that if one wants to go away/is ill then the other can double up.

The after school club at my DD's school charges £7 from 3.15 until 6pm and that includes a sandwich. I checked out the childminders in this area and they charge from £4 to £6.50 an hour for after school care which seems rather a lot in my opinion, but maybe I'm just tight! Don't know if that helps at all.

I am not sure what the regulations say about paying someone to care for a child: if the 'minder' come to your home, I think you're OK, but if the child goes to their home, they have to register with Ofsted if it's for more than X hours a day / week.

If you are paying someone who is NOT registered with Ofsted, then you can't claim the childcare element in your WTC.

And, to further complicate matters - unless the law's been changed - you can't claim if a relative is caring for your child, UNLESS they also care for other people's children.

IF there's a shortage of childminders in your area, and IF MIL is fit, well and loves other people's children, then she might consider registering as a Childminder anyway, given what you say about her. But it's not a trivial process.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: There’s an article on the main site you might like to read that gives more information on this subject. Actually there are two, this one and this one, although they are general rather then directly helpful in this situation.

    Hi

How about working out the cost of the travelling for the full round trip.
    Her house=school=your house=home.
That would give you a good starting point, at least that way you know she won't be out of pocket. Then you could just add on an extra few quid for the week. I'm sure she would try and refuse any 'payment' from you so if you make out that you are just covering her travel she would probably accept it that way.

The after school club my boys are on charges £9 for 3pm-6pm so as I have two in there for two days a week it costs me £36pw which is almost half my weekly wage!!!
