windscreen wipers not working - is that a breakdown?

My front windscreen wipers wouldn't work at all this morning - previously the water has frozen in the cold but this time they didn't budge at all (they weren't frozen to the screen!) My knowledgeable dad thinks the fuse may have gone, but I've not idea how to change a fuse, or where any spares that came with the car (I bought it new 3 years ago) would be.... can I call out my breakdown service for this or will they laugh at me??

  • ask a friend, neighbour etc to look at it

I guess a breakdown man might come to look at the fuse etc, buy he wont have a spare motor if its burnout out

I called out breakdown recovery when my window wipers stopped working. The guy was really helpful and tried loads of things for about an hour, then offered to tow me home (I did turn that down!) Turned out it was the motor though, luckily still in the warranty.

If it is just the fuse, the recovery people will have spares. There should just be a bit in the drivers area where the fuses go - ok, thats not very helpful!!
  • get your hand book, work out which one is the wiper fuse and see if its blown

Thanks guys - I don't know if I'll be able to open up where the fuses are as I haven't got a screwdriver and I'm staying away from home for work. But I'll have a go tomorrow before calling them out.

Damn I hope it's only the fuse. If it's the motor it's only 2 days out of warranty! That would be so irritating.

If it's just out of warranty and it is the motor, I would just go in and bat your eyelashes and see if they may help you!!! Good luck

This is the first time the blades have failed to move, so I'm hoping it won't be that....

my golf has this, i dont really care what the cause is as the whole car is crap, i would assume its either a fault wiper park sensor, or faulty switch

Hee! I've been to the local dealer here before and they were less than helpful - but it's probably worth a shot.

As an AA man for 17 years i can assure you this is a breakdown. It may be as simple as a fuse, the nut that holds the wiper arm tight come loose is my thinking though. Give them a call, you wont be alone!!
