ooh.. really far up north..
I'm waiting for a response by a Scot to that one.
So where did you live oop north?
(I live near Blackpool and went to uni in Durham for about six years so I'm also a proper [STRIKE]weirdo[/STRIKE] northerner)"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

superscraper..you pass my Northern Test (anyone North of the M62) I just qualify!
As to waiting for a responce from a Scot, I worked up there this summer, you'll have to wait til the pubs close for one of them to comment.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Leopard, I am pleased to accept your appology, and do hope you recover soon.
Thank you, timbim. I much appreciate your forbearance, your courtesy and your kind good wishes.
I'm having trouble differentiating visually between "m"s and "n"s, and also "a"s and "s"s, which isn't helped by the fact that both of these pairs are also located next to each other on the keyboard. "I"s, "1"s, "l"s (lower case "L"s) and "i"s are the worst, though. :cool:
(So, if anybody's got any of these in their names, please don't leap to conclusions if I spell your name wrong!
)
Also...if any doubts remain in your mind as to the other matter I raised (somewhat crassly, I confess, but the issue still irks), ask yourself who, after forensic investigation of the unpleasant allegation levelled against me last month, is still here and who isn't. 'Nuff said.
The (unrelated) matter of Conor's apparent banishment raises different concerns.
I had no problems with Conor. He called me "A RETARD" once, but I took it with a pinch of salt. That's the way he was. We locked horns a few times but we both learned things from what we disputed and we emerged from our arguments with a growing and mutual respect. He knows a lot about a lot of things and I shall miss him if he's gone from here. Above all, he kept everyone honest. If he didn't agree with what somebody posted he'd say so and get them to justify it. That was fine by me. We all learned from what was then discussed and if a view stated was wrong he'd tear it apart. When your argument passed muster with Conor you felt it had proved itself beyond doubt - and that was good. I felt he was our guardian against bull$hit and I respected him for that.
There needs to be more tolerance here. Someone in this thread got on a high moral horse about somebody else using the word "queer" - when they didn't know that it means something different in another part of the country. Try giving somebody in Australia the "thumbs-up" sign and you'll get punched in the mouth: it means something very different there! I'm not especially old but I remember the days when "queer" and "gay" had no connotations with sexuality at all and were used in everyday speech quite freely. "That seems a bit queer". "I'm feeling a bit queer, today." "She's always so happy and gay." Those words got hijacked and nobody now dares use them in their original meanings for fear of being misunderstood.
Too many people want this forum to be composed entirely of people like themselves and rejoice when someone who isn't departs from it. Instead of co-existing with them and learning things from them - and even teaching them things, in exchange. I have no illusions about what will be said about me, when I'm gone from here: what will they say about you?
There's a famous poem by Pastor Martin Niemöller which even he wrote in a few different forms but which basically goes like this:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
For I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
For I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
For I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
For I was not a Jew.
And when they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out...
Those who stand idly by, or rejoice, when those unlike themselves are eliminated would do well to remember it.
May you prosper, Conor, wherever (and whoever) you are. I remember you, and our disputations, kindly. :beer:
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I live in Wakefield now, but previously i've lived in Durham, and Sunderland.
the only problem i see with places like Preston, is that they are on the wrong side of the pennines..0 -

Luckily I dont actually live IN Preston (I really DONT like to associate myself with it
)
Give me your frank opinion on preston please Database. Always intrigued how bad people find it!:idea:0 -
I went to Preston once. How can I say, I found it quite a depressing place. Although, it can be happy that it's not Sunderland!
There's a lot of northerners here, chalk me up to be another one.0
