A Question Of Survival

In the past decades of good living based on an economic myth, we have taken it for granted that our homes would remain lighted by electricity and heated by electricity, gas and oil. Property prices were equally warmed and massaged by that false assumption.

The world has now changed. Our oil resources are being rapidly depleted ... gas reserves are similarly being depleted and are now subject to hijack by the major suppliers like Russia.

What will your property be worth when the gas and electricity gets shut off for lack of supply?

This is not fantasy ... this is the real future. Think about it.

Dave.

Once the lights start going out, it won't be long before all objections to nuclear power are swept aside and those nice French people build loads of stations for us.

Oil and gas are being depleted, in the case of the UKs offshore deposits, fairly rapidly. Worldwide not so rapidly. True due to this depletion and the need to fight global warming, life has to change, but it will go on. Technology as usual is the key.

Where have you been? We had the mentalist, armageddon, stick piling, mad max, gangs of chavs discussion around two weeks ago.

I think we all came to the conclusion that at the 'end of days' we would all eat Dopester's dog. Apart from a few crazy people who will actually eat Dopester. Oh, and that we'll get water from car windows. All sorted.

You should entice them in so you can eat them when everything goes mental.

IIRC electricity generation is dived up between pretty evenly between coal, gas and nuclear, though a lot of nuclear is going online within 15 years and the electricity company's aint happy about that.

Remember you arent hitting peak load a lot of the time and a lot of smart stuff is happening in the background to manage micro generation (hippys with windmills mostly) and load shedding (smart electronics to drop load when requested by the meter and smarter grid management).

Now resource depletion is an issue but we are hardly talking zombie apocalypse.

One point i would raise and im sure the authorities are aware of is one you stop supplying heat and power, all bets are off with mob rule kicking in fast, you aint safe no matter how rich you are.

Best line i ever head on such a subject was on ./ "With guns and ammo you can get food and water, the reverse is not true".
  • there are still large coal deposits ( plus , burning fossil fuels will help with global warming , ie a lot less scraping ice from the car during those bleak winter days  )

Not sure about that, I suggest anyone interested in this subject read 'Twilight In The Desert, The Coming Saudi Oil Shock And The World Economy', written in 2004, it predicted what has happened up until now with alarming accuracy, if it carries on being accurate, put your head between your legs and kiss your a$$ goodbye.

It mainly discusses the giant Ghawar field in Saudi Arabia, based on 20 years worth of papers written by Saudi Aramco employees, it makes very sober reading. It also discusses current technologies and how we have little chance of filling the gap between what will be needed and what can be supplied.

My feeling is almost all the worlds governments are holding out for a 'Eureka' moment by the world's greatest minds, to save us before we fall into the abyss, if I'm honest, my feeling is, they will fail.
