I guess if someone was suspected of money laundering their details would be passed onto the authorities, correct?

You're right. AML stands for Anti Money Laundering.
  • Hi,
The same thing happened to my niece last week and then my daughter yesterday!

I was incandescent with the way in which barclays did this. Again no reasons given, simply don't meet the criteria anymore, despite my daughter having her account for over a year, money going in and out, not overdrawn etc. They didn't even give her notice, her card was 'retained' by a retailer when she went to use it. When we went to our local branch, they told us she has 14 days to find alternative banking, they can't tell us what the criteria is, oh and the letter telling her about it was going out today, despite the fact they had already cancelled her debit card. Even the customer service advisor was at a loss as she acknowledged her account is always in credit and no dodgy use of card or anything. A strongly worded formal complaint has been sent to their Head office.

I am at a complete loss as to why Barclays are making these decisions. Meanwhile she can't access the £100 she has in her account unless she goes into the branch!!!!!!!
  • i had received the same letter yesterday, and the atm machine took my card whilst i tried to withdraw money. Im 16 years old and for the past 2 months i have been putting atleast £300-£500, i have £1460 in my current account and on the letter it says i have to withdraw any balance remaining before the 14 days other wise it will be lost. What do i do? Can i still withdraw that £1460 thats i have in my account? but how? Someone please tell me because thats £1460 on the line which is a lot of money.

you can go to a branch and take it out in cash.

Or you can take ID and proof of address to another bank, open an account with them and once you have the account number and sort code you can just transfer the money over.

Don't panic, we had absolutely no joy at all even when we complained to the Head office. Go into the branch and ask for your money and you will be given it no problem. My daughter opened up a 16-21 account with Alliance and Leicester online after this happened to her and she is very happy with the account. If you are getting ema don't forget to let them know your change of account details once you have them.

Its very very annoying, but don't let it get to you
  • Thanks alot, i was getting worried for a minute that all my money would be lost. But one more question is why are they cancelling my account for? I'm really confused.
  • did you daughter get her £100 btw?
  • Yes she got all her money back fine. We tried to get an answer from barclays as to why they were closing the account, but they refused to give an answer, saying it was in their terms and conditions that they could close the account at any time. We were really unhappy with the outcome and think they way they acted was out of order
