You could try asking for the info under the Data Protection Act - might turn up something if you're persistent...

Any reason offered is going to be a stab in the dark, without knowing all the details. There could be any number of reasons why we terminated our relationship.

If you don't like the way it was handled, please complain - here's how: http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=articlegroup&value=3657&site=pfs They might be able to shed some light, or fix it if it's a genuine mistake.

If not, you are still entitled to request all information we hold about you under the Data Protection Act.

Whilst I'm not going to argue you who the better bank is, since it's obviously ridiculously subjective, I will just say that I hope you logged a complaint - because yes, we do listen.

Agreed, everyone has their complaints about every bank and why different banks are better than others. But the best thing to do if anything goes wrong, as you say, is to complain as they generally do what to hear feedback both positive and negative. Got my interest rate up up to 6% which was advertised with the Halifax Guaranteed saver instead of 5.5%, I know, its not much but hey I signed up for a 6% rate :D
  • OP has not stated what payments have been going through account - I would want to know this first before advising him to complain.
The decision to close an account is not taken lightly - there has to be more to it than we have been told.

If it was anything serious they would of just closed the account straight away wouldn't they?

Keep in mind that what might be obviously dodgy transactions to us might not be to him. And, more to the point, anything we say here is going to be guess work - if he really wants to know, only Barclays is going to be able to tell him.

And he certainly could complain if he's been sent notice to close but been told nothing else - that's a pretty poor way to handle the situation. Of course, if it's closed off for AML or similar then virtually nothing would be said, but trying to clarify the situation with the branch, if the person genuinely believes themselves to be innocent, should not be met with shrugged shoulders.

The bank I work for closed the account of a 17 year old girl who continually used her solo card for online gambling and bingo. When I pointed out what she was doing wasn't strictly legal she went a little quiet.

may i ask what AML is??? and all i use the account for is to withdraw cash use my connect to shop sometimes ,topup my phone and used it to buy premium bonds a couple of times so not sure how those could be seen as dodgy??

You're right. AML stands for Anti Money Laundering.
