My local Lidl has component video / scart / hdmi leads in at the moment all for 3.99/4.99! They look really nice, gold connectors, decent cable and well worth the money!

Which I agree with, but these cables are a fabulous bargain, so I really dont know why you saying otherwise?
Because they're not a fabulous bargain - they're average at best. For instance, why is this one on eBay, at £5.69 inc. (nearly £2 cheaper), any inferior? The in-store price is silly, and the only explanation for it I can think of is that smooth-talking salesmen can con naive shoppers into buying these things with their new TVs, in the same way they used to with extended warranties until the message finally got through to most people that these are a con. A nice little earner. Yet, huge purple emphasis has been placed on this ridiculous original price.

There branded, good build quality cables for around £8 that you can pick up on the highstreet right now. Your point is misguided talking about these cables, its the £30 + cables you should be talking about. These cables at that price are a steal and certainly the ones people who ask for advice about what to buy should be guided too and recommended to buy. You can actually feel the difference between these ones and the ones given free with your DVD player, if any are given away free. They are heavier more sturdy and fit into the connections better, you can see a tangible increase in quality for the extra cash.

As for your cables, all I could fault would be the terminals look like cheap plastic and could be a bit flimsy.

I really cant see what the problem is.

How about these cables, here, go belittle them all you like, but please dont try to tell people these cables aren't worth the money. Honestly.
  • I bought a set for my DVD-recorder and TV and all the colours are messed up :( I can't find an option to sort it out.

It sounds like you've simply got the leads in the wrong order - try the different combinations until the colours are correct. But all the plugs and sockets will be colour-coded so it's a bit difficult to get them wrong.

  • I feel a bit silly having paid nealry £100 for a Monster component video cable for my expensive DVD player. I guess I could have researched it a bit better. The picture is so sharp and the colours so vivid though. I never really understood what I was buying when I bought it.

The pictures will be just as sharp and the colours just as vivid with a £5 cable. It just won't look as pretty. Sorry.

  • The Negotiator, you may be trying to plug component cables in to composite connections. Not all TV's/DVD players have componenet connections.

Thanks for the reply. My DVD recorder is a JVC DR-M10 and it is listed as component and has Y, R and Rb or whatever, including colour coding and has the choice for component in the set up menu?

My TV is an evesham 20.1" LCD which is definitely listed as having them and has a mode for it and also has the same colour coding and letters on the sockets. The colours are all messed up, as if I don't get any blue, the sky menus go green for example!

Am I missing something? I should plug in the 3 plugs in each end into DVD and TV, set up on DVD as component out and set up as component mode on TV? Then for sound a pair of phono cables.

I wonder if this works, I tried to do a video of it last night:
