My advice would be to buy an extended warranty at a reasonable price.
And Alfa's aren't that bad per se. It's the Selespeed that is the main problem,The man without a signature.0 -

Find online Alfa forums for advice. Find a reliable independent specialist to look after it.
Alfas aren't as bad as they used to be, at least they don't rust like they used to. Mechanically they tend to be OK, it's the electrics that tend to give trouble. A friend had a GTV and the engine and gearbox never gave him any problems but the heated rear window never worked, the electric windows were iffy and the air con and heating packed up.
I like the 156 but personally I'd avoid the Selespeed. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Drive it everywhere in reverse, it will be findIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

Every time you drive it, just treat it as the last time it will ever work and you'll be happy.
