  • but the tone of your posts does speak volumes at the moment....

you wanted help so listen to the advice - even if it isn't what you want to hear it's still advice that can help you get the grade you want. if it means a lot to you, and with a uni place on the line i imagine it will, then read what has been written because Oldernotwiser's post asks some important fundamental questions about your topic.

if you do want advice, apart from your tutor who seems to be being pretty helpful by giving you a topic already, then some more specifics on what you want to write would help. you'll find a lot more positive advice if you give a better idea of your plan so that people can be specific, rather than asking very generally for advice (which can come across as asking people to do the hard work for you).
no i was only asking for advice on where to get this information from, as we are only doing the planning stage right now, which is only writing about how we are going to research this and where we will get the information from. The actual development stage won't be done till May

ok - fine... but list where *you* think you'll get the info and then people will suggest other places.

a lot of people ask for help on this board and the responses you get will be much much more useful (and less hostile) if you put what you want to do and ask for anything else, rather than asking other people for everything. i'm not doubting that you have ideas already, just stating the way to get more useful help from other people.

if you are an A grade student, you should be able to do most of the running yourself, if that makes sense!

You would be able to get sales or profit figures, but probably not specifically for Glasgow. You'd probably need to get in touch with a regional manager or something or even just go into a shop and ask that manager. Although, I don't know how they would be able to tell you about tourism.

if you genuinely have no idea where to start, then you need a meeting with your tutor asap. some part of your course should have prepared you for this graded unit in some way (unless it's a very poor course!). you will also have to bear in mind the marking criteria to make sure that what write will score against what they want to read. that's something your tutor can give you more details on.

are there any reports from previous years that you can look at?
what did you do last time around to get data?

it may help to list what things you need to know (e.g. a a basic one, numbers of tourists) and then try to think of places to find the information. that list is something you have to be able to do on your own. finding the details of the information may be more difficult, but it's asking a bit much to get people to plan your entire project for you!

last year we didn't have to pick a topic, we had to make up 3 tours to scotland and itineriaries to go with them.
but this year we had to pick a topic..and i was off before christmas because of a chest infection, and the planning stage is due in on the 20th.
So my lecturer just asked me what i like...i said shoppin lol! And thats what i'm doing.
He told me what to look into to, credit crunch, knock on effects, housin market, shops closing etc.
But not where to get this info!

Last year we had a much better lecturer, who talked us though it all and even gave us her marking scheme!, but we don't have her this year :( and she only teaches in my college on a Thursday...my day off!
This lecturer we have has pretty much left us to our own devices...and i don't work well that way! lol

I don't mean this in an offensive way, but are you sure university is for you? You will not be talked through anything that you have to do and if you do a dissertation then you are completely left to your own devices, and you have to come up with a topic by yourself too.

Particularly if you're going straight into the third year of a degree!
  • it's only for one year though, so i think i'll manage, everyone in my class has applied too. Plus no one in my family has ever been to college or uni before so they really want me to go

if you genuinely cannot think of anywhere you could possibly look for this info, then i really can't see you thriving at university (for a start, there is an entire forum here where there are specific boards to look for posts with useful links - but you're here asking other people to do all the legwork for you!). there's nothing wrong with that it all - not everyone is suited for it and you should think long and hard about what you want to do or you may get to uni and find it nothing like you expected.....

going to uni to please other people is a recipe for disaster (see studentphil!)
