Ideas, opinions, advice Graded Unit - HND Tourism

Options
ok so i have decided to do my graded unit this year on Shopping! haha i know, well its what i'm good at!

And how the shopping in Glasgow has been effected by the credit crunch, and now we are relying more and more in tourists coming in to help keep our shops afloat.

Anyway i just came up with the idea today, and have another week or so to play around with the idea before i need to start writing my planning stage.

Just asking for some advice...opinions on where to start looking for information about this type of thing...who to speak to about it etc etc

any help would be greatly appreciated as i need to Get an A in this to get into UNI!!

Wouldn't it be a good idea to find out whether shopping in Glasgow actually HAS been affected by tourism before you choose this as a subject?

How are you going to research it and what definition of tourism are you going to use?

it is, as bus loads of tourists from Ireland come over every weekend just to go to Ikea!

And at Christmas loads of people from Europe came here to do their christmas shopping.

I didn't exactly choose it my lecturer told me to do it, as i have been off and hadn't picked a subject yet lol.

Urm i study tourism, and have done for the past 3 years so i think i know a thing or two about tourism in my own city

You don't do research based on making a personal observation and then finding evidence to support what you think, you do the research and then reach a conclusion. You also need to be aware that people coming just to shop are not necessatrily defined as "tourists"!

As someone who has taught Travel and Tourism at a college for over 20 years I was offering you my help but after your exceptionally ill mannered reply I respectfully suggest you go and get stuffed!
  • basic defination of a tourist: A person who travels to somewhere outside of their usual place of residance or work.

If you've studied T&T for 3 years at HND level and still think that there's only one definition of a tourist then heaven help you! My BTEC National students knew better than this after the first month.

The very simplistic definition you've quoted has enormous numbers of exceptions; how about visiting friends and relatives or going to a place of worship? Everyone going into town for a drink's a tourist are they?

Heaven help you if you do manage to get onto the third year of a degree, you are really going to struggle!

You could do something about Americans or Europeans coming over to do shopping or on holiday because of the weak pound? But I wouldn't say they are keeping shops afloat.

And just to be pedantic Ikea is not in Glasgow - it is in Renfrewhsire so be careful with your terms of reference.

This article shows some of the downturn and project impact - again not Glasgow but you get the idea

but the tone of your posts does speak volumes at the moment....

you wanted help so listen to the advice - even if it isn't what you want to hear it's still advice that can help you get the grade you want. if it means a lot to you, and with a uni place on the line i imagine it will, then read what has been written because Oldernotwiser's post asks some important fundamental questions about your topic.

if you do want advice, apart from your tutor who seems to be being pretty helpful by giving you a topic already, then some more specifics on what you want to write would help. you'll find a lot more positive advice if you give a better idea of your plan so that people can be specific, rather than asking very generally for advice (which can come across as asking people to do the hard work for you).

    Your ignorance speaks volumes!

    Edit:
To be so incredibly rude to one of the few people who can offer you expert, specialist advice is one of the most foolish actions I've ever come across!
