I wasn't going to watch this programme, figured it'd be tough watching genuine people suffer.
Having skimmed this thread I think I might see about catching a repeat or finding it online somewhere as it sounds like a programme revelling in the stupidity of greedy idiots that got what they had coming.
I'm not heartless, I just reserve my sympathy for those that are deserving.0 -

I didn't watch it because I've watched so many of these stories where people whine about the terrible mess they're in, but don't explain where the money they MEWd went, or aren't challenged on why they have Sky HD and a flash car. They usually make my blood boil so I avoid them - looks like I did the right thing!0 -
I was talking with a buddy of mine in the south east just a few days ago. He and I bought in the 70`s. We remarked that we never heard of anyone getting repossessed. Lots I know who bought then and a bit later had no problems. Most of them are not "bread heads" and have a fairly frugal style of living.
However I will freely admit that a large dollop of inflation worked wonders.0 -

Its on BBC iPlayer.
I found it a bit sad really. I know every couple had themselves to blame to some extent and could have done more to help themselves..esp the mortgage advisor - I think he could have gone out and got another job instead of 'hoping' for clients. But none of them where hoping to make mega bucks out of their homes.. they just wanted somewhere to bring up their families. I think they are typical of the types swept up with all the housing boom hype. Not educated enought to think carefully about they are doing or understand the consequences. This is an illustration of why we need financial education in school. It was the children I really felt for - what a start to life.£2019 in 2019 #44 - 864.06/20190 -

The children will be fine, probably teach them a good lesson at an early age. None of them are going onto the streets, children aren't bothered about that sort of stuff, its the parents getting upset that worries the kids.
I've just watched it on BBC iplayer, why was that guy so annoyed at getting a caravan to live in? So many things in the peoples lives in this program were plainly wrong.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Yeah, they definitely go for extremes to give it the sensational angle in order to keep the viewer's attention.
However, it's no exaggeration to say that a hell of a lot of people lived well beyond their means and now face big financial problems.
As Pobby says, personal debt is going to be the big story and what makes this recession particularly bad. Actually, corporate debt too. And government debt for that matter.....
I make you right on that. They had a similar one on a month or so ago on Polish builders.
You may have sen it, where two extensions are built. One by a british builder and another by a Pole.
Bad examples again were used as the British guy built an extension ready to fall down, while the Poles job was first class and 40% cheaper.
I wonder whether the producers are out to sensationalise the theme of these programmes.0 -

I saw this last night and although this sounds heartless, I think they were all greedy and moronic and then wanted to blame the banks for wanting their loan paid back!!
As for the mortgage advisor guy- what a compete idiot- makes you wonder how he ever qualified as someone to give financial advice!!! Anyone who is prepared to pay 11% interest for a mortgage needs their head read- should have stayed renting!
Funny too- how when the car sales guy got angry with the council for not sorting out housing- so its ok for him to default on his mortgage etc but then expects everyone else to clear up his mess!
To buy your house for £40K and then end up owing 150K is just AMAZING! It didn't even look that great in the show- I would expect a mansion with top range appliances etc for the amount of money they spent!
But like others have said- they still had tv's in each room cars, SKY tv etc etc.
Perhaps they should have spent a bit more time on MSE!!!!0 -
