Nearly had an accident on the way to work this morning due to the damage done on my car (my indicator has finally decided to give up!).

Your car is either roadworthy or it isn't.
If you nearly had an accident then it doesn't sound safe.

For the sake of your own girls and other people on the road you need to put safety as a priority.
If this means getting a hire car then the claims handler should be able to arrange this.
Some people need a hire car straight away, so it's not unusual.
  • Yes, but insurers will always try an argument that temporary repairs should be done (to make vehicle roadworthy) rather than hire, so OP should check first if this is possible. Especially if it is just an indicator.

Yes, good point and there is a duty to "mitigate" costs.
This means that if a bus/train/taxi is cheaper then you should do that instead.
This is to avoid people splashing out on expensive alternatives because someone else is paying.

But certainly don't risk getting points or having an accident.
You are not expected to put yourself to huge inconvenience or take risks with safety.
  • FINALLY - they said they have raised a cheque (last Friday). I still haven't received anything in the post. does anyone know how long this takes? I have been using taxis this week. costs a fortune!
