Other party's car insurance is stalling!

  • It is unusual that an insurer would delegate a simple damage claim like yours to a solicitor at this stage. If what you say is correct then it appears you'll have to leave a message and await a response from the solicitor?

Generally, if you go through a claims handling/management company it is them that will commision the engineers (assessors) report. Or if you are claiming for injury also they will sell your claim to a solicitor who will commision the report.

The person I spoke to gave me the wrong information. I finally got through to the solicitor and she told me that it hasn't been sent to them as they deal with the hire car documents and as I don't have a hire car then it has got nothing to do with them. Nearly had an accident on the way to work this morning due to the damage done on my car (my indicator has finally decided to give up!). I really need my car to get to work and to pick my girls up from school so I'm getting desperate now. I rang NFU again this morning and the person dealing with my claim wasn't available. Totally fed up now and would like to know what to do for someone to finally listen. Any more advice very welcome.

  • Mrs Skint - ask to speak to the handler's (at NFU) manager or team leader and state you require a callback this afternoon.

Advise them to note the claim records that your vehicle is unroadworthy and unsafe & that you intend to obtain a hire car and claim the charges from them unless they settle the vehicle damage claim within 7 days.

See if you can get a temporary repair to the indicator.

  • Can i just add, avoid getting a hire car if at all possible - just use it as a 'threat' for now, they will not want your claim to increase so it will hopefully get their bums in gear.

NFU are really hard work to deal with, ever since the bad floods a year or so ago, they only deal with TPI's & reps by correspondance only, a total nightmare they are, claims take so long to settle when they are involved.

Ask for a copy of the engineers report, so you have something in writing.

Because there are no ongoing losses, they are probably treating as it as less urgent, im sure if you got a hire car from a CHO or whoever they would deal more quickly.

Thanks Atermis - will the engineer give me the report? He deals with NFU so I'm not so sure, even if I am entitled to it!

  • I don't think they will give you a copy, but you can ask!

Why wouldn't I be allowed to have a copy of the assessor's report? It IS my car they assessed.

  • Yes, but the engineer was instructed by and paid by the insurer....

As I say, worth asking if you would like a copy.

I don't think it helps your situation, it cannot be regarded as an offer, it will simply show the valuation figure.
