Hyperlink probs - SORTED!!

in Techie Stuff
I'm having constant problems with clicking on hyperlinks to external websites and they're just not working.
I've done virus checks, security checks, defrag, scandisk, re-booted, cursed at it :-X, almost kicked it, left it alone, cursed again and still no joy. >:(
Connection to the internet is fine, so is opening web sites and browsing within them but it wont let me go to external sites. It almost opens the page and the only way round it is to stop the page loading, pull down File Menu, click on work Offline then click refresh. I then get the message to connect and it's OK.
Sorry if this is garbled gobbledegook but I'm not a techie person (obviously ;D). By the way, I'm running Windows 98 and have Norton Security which has been problem free and I am well pleased with.
Anyone out there to save the day and my sanity??
No doubt it's something dead simple and stupid ( bit like me I 'spose :-/) but I'd be ever so grateful for any advice.

are you using windows xp and internet explorer as your webbrowser?
i think the latest service pack for windows xp has a popup blocker built in, you maybe experiencing the popup blocker in action, as often when a website has a link to an external site, they make it open in a new window, so it sounds like the built in popup blocker is blocking the new window from opening. You might need to go into internet explorers settings and change something there, im not using windows xp so i dont know exactly what you would need to do.
Failing that I would highly recommend you install Mozilla Firefox, its a web browser, but its a lot better than I.E you can download it from here: http://www.mozilla.org/firefox you shouldnt have any problems with that.
hope this helps,

Steev - The OP does say that they are running Win98.

Speckyhen - you say you have done security checks, AV checks, yada, yada, yada, but you do not specifically mention any spyware/adware checks.
You might want to check the computer security and viruses sticky thread at the top of page one of this forum, specifically thinking about Ad-Aware and SpyBot.
If that does not solve your problem, come back and let us know - it may be that you PC has been 'hijacked' by some other piece of malware and some more expert help will be required.

oops *blush*, read it a bit too fast, still could be a popup blocker problem i guess...

Thanks for replying so promptly. I've tried the pop up thingy and it makes no diference.

Have got norton security running adware/spyware and all the other security checks as per usual and there's no probs there either.
Had a look at the sticky wotsit at the start of thread and am still wading through that so I hope to find something useful there. Shame I can't use the System restore cos I aint got Winduz xp :-/
I'll keep on looking and hope someone wil be able to rescue me

:'( :'( :'( Tried all sorts of stuff and to no avail.
I reckon there's a file missing from somewhere but heaven knows where it is. So, back to square one with the long-winded navigation.
I'm now afraid to do much on the ol' PC in case I really muck it up big time.
Thanks for your help anyway - it's good to know there's someone out there who doesn't tell me I'm a total plank - even tho' I am :-/Happiness is knowing what you can do without0 -
OK, have you tried disabling Norton temporarily, and seeing if that solves the problem?0
-
Yup- tried it and no joy there either, but thanks for the tip.

Also tried re-installing IE6 just in case but no change.
i am definitely not a happy bunny :'(Happiness is knowing what you can do without0 -
From what I've found I don't think the combination of IE6 and Windows 98 works too well. The recommended IE for 98 seems to be 5.5 SP2.
See this article for uninstalling IE6 and returning to a previous version.0 -
Or Firefox may be an alternative for you0

Thanks for that.
Someone also suggested I do a registry check/clean-up which i did and it told me I'm missing a few files, especially recncl.dll, ctreestd.dll, CaPlgin.ax, WmPlayer.ocx.
anyone know if there's anywhere i can download them from or do I have to re-install software?Happiness is knowing what you can do without0
