  • Hi, I'm new to the site and would like some advice. I've just had a debt recovery agency on the phone and am distraught by what they said and the way they spoke to me! The debt was from a mortgage shortfall after we gave our house up for voluntary repossession in 1993, when my husband went bankrupt. It was with Halifax who sent the debt immediately to the recovery agency when I said I could not afford the full amount (£25,000+).I have been paying them £50 per month for over 10 years(not a single payment missed!). Last year they started harrassing me for full payment so after visiting the CAB they worked out that I could actually only afford £33, and the payments were reduced. Now they say it is no longer being dealt with by CAB, they can no longer accept any payments and it must be paid in full. They said I would have to get extra on my mortgage to pay them(they actually said I shouldn't have even applied for a mortgage whilst I had an outstanding debt with them), or they would arrange a consolidation loan there & then. They obviously have no idea of what the original debt was for as I was asked 'what I'd spent the money on?'. They said it was the CAB's fault for reducing my payments in the first place. I said they would have to take me to court and was told they don't do that, they would just send the bailiffs! I don't know what to do?

  • hi there,

yes i have had the "pleasure" of dealing with these half wits.

would like to offer you some advice but would need to know your situation.

i am now making my repayments to some other morons called robinson way and company but a few years ago the debt was with rma, and they seem not to have gotten any better on the customer relations side of things - why does this not surprise me - they are a bunch of cowboy 2bob fools of which i told them!

it surprises me to the degree of their harrasment in your case, but you should write a letter of complaint to thier registered office (or was anyway in 2004):

    RMA Risk Management Alternatives
    Old Docks House
    Watery Lane
    Preston
    PR2 1AU

i would also copy in the Office Of Fair Trading:

    OFT
    Fleetbank House
    2-6 Salisbury Square
    London
    EC4Y 8JX

have you asked for the last 6 years worth of statements from barclaycard, it could be they owe you money you can use to repay RMA ?

    hope this helps

Hi Guy's. I have just recieved a card from them saying that they are going to call between 8am and 7pm next Friday. They've given me a number to phone if that time will be inconveinient. I have stopped speaking to them on the phone and have asked for everything in writing. Should i be worried and be expecting them at more door or is this one of their tactics to get me to call them?
  • I too have recently had dealings with these idiots. They started writing me letters and calling less than 2 weeks after I informed MBNA that I couldn't make the repayments they were asking for due to changes in my circumstances. At first I was terified at the thought of having debt colectors chasing me, especially when I got one of their infamous postcards saying that someone would be "calling" on tuesday betweeen 8 am and 8pm. I live with relatives and the last this I want is debt collectors at the door! I have since looked at posts on here from other people who have had dealings with these idiots and I feel much better already.

I have told MBNA that I am prepared to deal with them only as there is no way I'm going to call these idiots on an 087 number, but the snotty cow I spoke to told me she could not contact RMA and ask them to leave me alone as I had to do that myself. Funnily enough about 10 mins after slamming the phone down on the snotty MBNA lady who told me I should by my kids clothes in charity shops not Next if I'm experiencing finacial difficulties (yes she did actually say that!) I received a call from RMA regarding a complaint I had made about them to MBNA! The RMA lady wanted to confirm my date of birth, address etc so I refused to give this information and toyed with her for a bit by asking her to give me her address and date of birth (childish I know, but it really cheered me up, especially when she actually answered! ) She told me that if she couldn't confirm my identity then she would have to write to me.

I'm not going to worry about them anymore as they seem to be really unproffesional and have complete and utter disregard for the rules and guidelines their supposed to follow. If I get any hassle from them, I intend to go straight to OFT and Trading Standards and I am even prepared to call the police on them if come knocking!
  • I had a £12000.00 debt handed to RMA in 1994, and immediatly realised that I was dealing with a "nasty" company. It started of with phone calls demanding full payment, OK no problem. I informed them of my situation, and offered payments of £20 a month, sent them a Financial Statment. No problem. They phoned and informed me that the interest was frozen, No problem.... Then! in April of 2003 they phoned, I was out. My 8 year old son answered the phone. They asked him "Where is your dad, is he at work. What car does he have, are you going anywhere nice for your holidays this year". My wife overhearing his answers, wandered who he was talking to. So she took the phone and asked who was she speeking to. The caller put the phone down. On dialing 1471 she was given a number, upon calling the number it was answered by RMA..... When I returned home I was fumming! I phoned them to complain, but was met with comments like: "What do you expect when you get into debt". I asked to speek to a supervisor and was put on hold for 5 minites or so then the line went dead................. This was the start of a 3 year battle with RMA........ They have phoned me on a number of occasions at 1 and 2 am. They have searched for telephone numbers of relatives in the phone book, and phoned my parents who are in their 80,s informing them of my debt, and attempting to get them to pay..... They phoned my eldest son after obtaining his number from his website........ but they drew a blank their!
This sort of thing went on until Feb 2007, (regular monthly payments continued throughout).. In feb I wrote to RMA informing them that I would no longer deal with them, and requested that they sent me a Statement of my account, clearly showing all payments made to them and charges added. They did not reply.... I phoned them, and was told that they would not write to me and that my account balance had increased to over £14,000.00 due to interest that had been added. """Remember in 2004 they had told me that the interest had been frozen""".......... I then went aff on one. And for the first time in my dealings with them I was rude!!!!!!!
I have now written to Barclays and informed them that I refuse to deal with RMA anymore. And that I will willingly make payments to them direct..... No reply as yet..........
After all of this I have come to the conclusion that:
    (1) RMA will lie to you
    (2) RMA will try to extract gain information from your family members (any age).
    (3) RMA will tell you if you have no job, there are always vacancies at McDonalds.
    (4) RMA will use any underhad method of intimidation they can get away with.
    (5) RMA Do not realise that they are collecting less money for the creditors, by addopting this attitude to debters.

    AND REMEMBER:

IF RMA TELL YOU INTEREST IS FROZEN "GET IT IN WRITTING" OR BE PREPARED TO FIND THEY LIED TO YOU.
  • OMG!! I cant believe all the complaints about RMA! I have recently been recieving calls from them but they wont tell me what its regarding so i refuse to give my details to them! All i ask is that they tell me what account im dealing with and i would gladly talk with them but all they do is continue to be rude and say they are going to continue to call me every day!! I am seriously thinking of taking things further as i feel im being harrassed and they cant even tell me why they are calling me! Has anyone else taken things further? Im not sure what to do but im totally stressed out by it all.

Just come home to a card, Hand writen but with an office or franked post mark saying they are calling on the 26th. This is after I called them on Monday and they agreed to hold calls etc until I send them my statement from the CAB. Really worried that they'll come around when I'm not in and pressure the kids or my partner. Do they actually do Home Visits?

I gather that a rather good tactic with some (don't know about this DCA), is to do something like this

    them "ring ring"
    you "hello"
them"we're the nasty debt company and you are"
you "one moment beeeeeeeeeeep. I now have to tell you that this call is being recorded so that there is no misunderstanding later"

I gather that they will either
    a) put the phone down
    b) be really nice to you
    c) mumble something about writing to you.

Of course you don't have to have a recorder, you could (shh) pretend! I mean hell these scum buckets lie to you ALL the time!!

But if nothing else tell them you are keeping a log (and do) of calls to pass onto the police when you report their harassment. They MIGHT back off.

I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
