Can't be good news for the ex-Woolies staff. After all, if you are recruiting are you going to take a well-spoken, tidy ex-M&S person or a 'ladette' from Woolies?
I dare you to post that opinion in The Arms.

I'm not surprised if M&S are in trouble.

I spent £ 350.00 Online last week with, set delivery for yesterday (Monday)

Saturday morning got a phone call from some 'stiff' claiming to be from M&S saying there was a small problem with my order, then he asked me for my full name. I ask why he needs to know that. and he say's it's to prove who I am. I say, "well you phoned me, so it should be you who has to prove who you are, and anyway the order was placed online, so if you have a problem then you should E Mail me, and then we won't have to go through this charade"

Anyway, I check my email about an hour later, and I have an email from M&S saying that they need to change the delivery date to Tuesday. Then I get another email 1/2 and hour later telling me that their "associate" has cancelled my order because of 'difficulties' in contacting me.

    Well F&^k them then !!!

Bought virtually the same item (probably better) from Harrods online on Sunday, and it'll be delivered today.

    Tw*ts !!!!

I ordered some flowers on the internet from M&S which they failed to deliver. On contacting them, they rectified it immediately, threw in a free teddy bear and cancelled the charge. That's what makes M&S stand out from the crowd.

Matter of interest, if M&S cut 1000 jobs, that means that 69000 staff keep their jobs. A bit different from Woolies (who?) etc.

    1,000 out of 70,000.

M&S are safe as are Next and Debenhams, 3 biggest chains around practically.

It was inevitable that this was going to happen with consumers spending less.

I think some were expecting these kind of stores to go into administration, not a chance.

Thankfully M&S made the transition a couple of years back to using cheap labour in China to make the clothes. If they'd still been using that UK manf. company (which went bust when they lost the contract) M&S would scuppered with madly priced goods.
  • I dislike most of the big chains stores, shopping centres etc. That horrible perfumy smell, overheated, the queues, the zombified customers, urgh. I tend to buy things online or from small local shops.

The nearest I come to big department stores is when watching repeats of 'Are You Being Served' and that's mainly just to lust after Miss Brahms. ;)

How many of the staff being lost are temporary part time staff. Our M&S's round here take on Christmas staff and the go after Christmas no matter what.
I'm stressed enough over this - please don't add to it.

Maybe if they'd kept the UK manufacturing company their quality would be as good as it used to be.

And I for one wouldn't mind paying a few quid extra for quality.

M&S used to be really good - you could pop in buy a pair of trousers or a blouse in your size and know it would fit - you wouldn't need to try it on - now you need about 4 pairs of trousers and you might find one that fits.

I bought a dress a couple of months ago - £70 and the hem fell down the first time I wore it - and they argued when I took it back - all I needed was a needle and thread - well I refuse to pay £70 for a dress to sew up the hem myself. Cardigans and coats where buttons aren't sewn on properly.

I might as well shop in Primarni

They use some of the same suppliers as Primark. ;)

Edited to say: with some of their items it's now easy to see who they use the same suppliers as.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I didn't know that - but why am I not surprised.

I don't shop in Primark - but we do have one and I have been it - it is always absolutely packed - with huge queues of people waiting to pay for things!

baileysbattlebus, I so agree with you. M&S lost their way years ago. They went from good, quality produced stuff in the UK, to absolute rubbish in recent years.

I am 50 years old so have had M&S in my life since the excitement of my first bra, 12 years old, Xmas 1970!! :o;)

I do fortunately still have money to spend if I choose, but with a view to well made, natural fibres and not looking like a granny or sequined, embellished up to my eyeballs in badly made tat!!

Apart from knickers, I have not kept a single thing I have bought from their store in the last 5 years, and only a few items before that. The staff in the returns department became like old friends to me at one stage, I was returning so much stuff I bought off the rails without trying on. I no longer even bother looking, as I know all I will see is badly made, designed rubbish aimed at who I know what?!!

I gather they are launching a new range aimed at my age group soon......but I am truly not interested any longer.

I have no sympathy for them as a company! Yet I felt sad at seeing Woolworths go and Debenhams being mentioned today in the press.
