    >I'm quite shocked at how things are beginning to escalate<

Massive inflation will soon follow the collapse, as anyone left raises prices to pay debt and reflect the collapse in the £.

I'm not surprised if M&S are in trouble.

I spent £ 350.00 Online last week with, set delivery for yesterday (Monday)

Saturday morning got a phone call from some 'stiff' claiming to be from M&S saying there was a small problem with my order, then he asked me for my full name. I ask why he needs to know that. and he say's it's to prove who I am. I say, "well you phoned me, so it should be you who has to prove who you are, and anyway the order was placed online, so if you have a problem then you should E Mail me, and then we won't have to go through this charade"

Anyway, I check my email about an hour later, and I have an email from M&S saying that they need to change the delivery date to Tuesday. Then I get another email 1/2 and hour later telling me that their "associate" has cancelled my order because of 'difficulties' in contacting me.

    Well F&^k them then !!!

Bought virtually the same item (probably better) from Harrods online on Sunday, and it'll be delivered today.

    Tw*ts !!!!

I have a draw full of odd socks. Could you send them over here to see if I can make a pair?

It's only a few days past Christmas. How can you all have a sock-shortage. :p

I've still got a half a bin-bag full of brand new quality socks nabbed for a bargain at the C&A closing down sales still to use. ;)

I'm quite shocked at how things are beginning to escalate.I've never seen it happen so quickly or quite so harshly in other recessions.
At this rate we are'nt going to have much choice on high street left.

To be honest I disagree. Look at the companies that are going bust - Woolies (completely outdated), Wedgewood (luxury product, archaic), Zavvi (sold for £1 by Branson, struggling due to Amazon, Play, etc), Adams (looks like it's from the 80s), MFI (undercut by Ikea) etc, etc. The companies that are struggling would probably have gone bust earlier had it not been for the excessive spending by consumers keeping them going.

It's really sad for those people working there, but these are just not viable businesses anymore.

Even if there's no union involvement M&S still have to comply with the law.

I'm sure that M&S redundancy packages are better than the minimum allowed. Lot's of small companies are laying off staff and paying the minimum required under law.
  • This is not just any redundancy package...this is an M&S redundancy package...

I can see two floors of one of the M&S head offices from my desk.. since the architect who designed this building put glass walls everywhere.

They don't seem to be doing a lot really. I shall bring updates if i see well dressed women in the lifts crying

M&S are owned by shareholders. If the company needs to restructure, they have to do it. The shareholders' best interests matter more than the staff, in my opinion.

C&A on the other hand is owned by a Dutch family. They should have closed their UK shops down many years before they did, but they left them running at multi-million pound annual losses - with what I suspect was some sort of partial social conscience.

John Lewis... that is one I've always found mysterious. Technically isn't it a "mutually" owned company? Owned by the staff, and there was some newspaper conjecture a few years back that if they "demutualised" each staff member, even basic sales-floor staff, could be in-line for £50,000 each... but the real power for that to be even up for discussion locked in the boardroom, and never came to pass.

It's impossible. They've been eaten by the sock monster, never to return.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Went into M&S on Sunday, massive queues at returns, reasonable queues at other tills and they wouldn't let me exchange one item and buy 6 more without going to the returns queue. Went accross the way to Next and spent money there instead, Will go back to M&S and return the one item in the week without buying anything else.
